My apologies if this is not the right group to post..
Is there some software available that would be useful for putting audio
files on
a computer hard drive and accessing them somewhat like a jukebox, especially
with some database fields stored with each filename for doing lookups,
random access, etc?
Some direction on doing google searches would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

Apache Web server has a module sepcifically for that purpose. There's also
a plugin for WinAmp that doesn't do a horrible job of it (but it doesn't
use a database), and the BlueVade jukebox also does it (again, no "real"
db).

All of them are free.

Look for "apache" for the basic server. I strongly recommend a "LAMP"
server - Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP. The module in question is
libapache-mod-mp3 and the Debian package for it is here:

<http://packages.debian.org/stable/web/libapache-mod-mp3>

You can run Apache on Windows. I don't recommend it.

I am hoping and lurking here for the same information.
And at least 5 others, suggestions as to appropriate group?

Your request assumes further hardware above and beyond the hard drive
mentioned. For google, try "jukebox" and "mp3" and "player"

I have just cycled thru all the jukebox programs for windows I could
find. Setting up touch screen kiosk for next to the tv. YMMV

The winner was J.River Media Center.
A real close second and still a contender (ease of use for spouse)...
is the 4AM combo. (google will enlighten).

My favorite all time is WinAmp. Just was not working on the 800*600
touch LCD as well as I had hoped, suggestions allways welcome for a
good full screen skin.

Unless your needs are specific, WinAmp!

Report Back!

Frank.

thanks for the great reply. I don't mind at all running on
Linux and I'll for sure check out the Apache mod.
Thanks again
Bill

There's also the Modix HD3510 - I have three of them with 250 gig hard drives
installed. Includes infrared remote control, can work with or without a
computer (it acts as a USB 2.0 hard drive when attached to the PC). Plays
most media files, including ISO images of DVD disks.

The database options in JRivers MC seem to meet your needs, very
flexable, add and delete, seems to support user defined additions to
the standard mp3 tags. It uses Genre field for catagory but allows to
sort by more catagorys than I will ever use.

I have a 40 song playlist, and was looking at photos at the same time,
was nice to "touch" 2003 then December then double tap the first photo
to see the pics I took over the hollidays on vacation. Stop the
slideshow, rotate the pic, add names of who is in it,where etc.
toggle on the slide show and walk away. The music never stoped.
I have been using JRivers MC for a couple of weeks, what has impressed
me most, where the couple of "I wish it would do this" episodes that
where exceeded with a fiew moments with the help file.

And to make an attempt at keeping on topic, I immediatly went out and
bought a RadioShack MPA250 to sit between the speakers and source. (an
amp)

Frank.
