with short post for single play, machine will not turn off when arm returns
after record is finished. can anyone help? also, what is the short post
with a flat side on one end for?

I expect that thing needs a complete going-over. The grease in the various
assemblies must be hard as a rock...plus the idler wheel (if not replaced)
probably scalloped and hardened as well. These things were never all that
great to begin with. After 30 years of wear and deterioration, it probably
sounds like the NY subway....
