People say they can hear the difference but I can't so I leave it
alone.
As for keeping compression off the mains, that is not an issue. You
can compress the mains with stellar results, just don't over
compress.
Keep in mind a few things to look for. Audio, when compressed wrong
not only loses dynamics but makes a pumping sound. You might want that
for some things. You'll hear it if you are thinking about looking for
it.
If you compress everything just a little, you can bring out dynamics
too. When you have a guitar miked up close, you'll see that some
things really get accentuated. A compressor can level it out and make
it sound much more natural but only when used lightly. I like to
compress an acoustic that I'm figure style on with about 2:1 or maybe
2.5 :1. That brings up the quite stuff and mellows the over picked
notes. I do about the same to my vocals. I usually compress the hell
out of the bass at about 6:1 so that it is just a solid backbone. I do
something similar to snare and kick but I leave the toms a lot more
loose. Back ground vocals I compress the hell out of too so that they
are not the dynamic for people to pay attention to, leaving the lead
vocal as the main actor. .. usually good....
In the end when everything has the flavor that fits into the pie just
right, I often compress the entire mix by about 1.5:1 to 2:1. that
brings everything into the same room so to speak.
Having said all that, I do natural sounding music where as in a dance
song none of that applies. I am not into dance/trance/house...
whatever. I do more of an acoustic style. When you are going for
effects, nothing but creativity applies. The over squashed sound might
be fine and dynamics can be achieved by removing instruments for a few
bars. That sort of non intelligent mood music needs to grab your body,
not your brain. No I don't like it but I do understand it....
Good luck - make lots of music
