HELP! Recording LPs to Computer

Okay, I'm pretty useless at this sort of thing, but I have dozens of
LPs (Is that called "Vinyl" now?) that I want to record to my Windows
XP computer and thence to CD.

My "Stereogram" is a Sony and is about thirty five years old. It's an
HMP - 40 Stereo Music system but it still plays superbly.

I've tried putting Red and White cables in all the usual places and
putting the little round thing in all the holes in the back of the
Dell.

Nothing seems to work. It has a DIN socket, whatever that is, but I
don't have a lead (wire) for that.

I'm using RIP Vinyl which works but not as a Line In.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Donnie.

Line in on your Dell (blue), you need a RCA to mini phone plug cable.
Connect the RCA end to "tape out/line out" on your Sony.
You should be able to open your Dells Volume Control and Play the
sound from the Sony as a test.

You will need some sort of recording software to deal with the big
files (300-400Meg) recording a LP can make.
I use Polderbits Sound Recorder/Editor from www.polderbits.com. It is
Trialware and was easy to use, has click anf scratch filters.

I might have but it's dark under the table this thing is on. I have
looked in all seriousness but these terms are all Japanese to me.
(Well it's a Sony right <g>)

IS your Sony a European

Please don't shout at me <sob> I'm ignorant <g>
Sorry, the Sony has a DIN socket and yes it's English.

I'm not sure what an RCA Jack is but I have to be at work at 06.00
tomorrow so I'm going bye bye now.

Let's just pretend that I'm like TOTALLY stupid, and therefore where
might I obtain such a cable/wire/thingy?

I live near Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Hey my Sony TC165 has a DIN (I bought it at the PX in Germany).
Mine has a small switch near that says Rec/PB <-> Aux

Put it in Aux and use the Line out Jacks. DIN is easy to plug into
between DIN devices, but the cross talk is bad, the levels lower and
you would need a DIN to Mini-phone plugs cable.

Now days the are those Red and White plugs that look like a cheap tiny
crown with a prong out the middle.

>>> Line in on your Dell (blue), you need a RCA to mini phone plug cable.

Mini phone plug looks just like you Walkman (portabl player)
headphones have.

Any Electronics store. These are *really* common.

Gotcha - I now recognise those tiny crown things, and will put on my
stupoid act (comes so easily) in my local electronics store.

Thanks again. Really, THANKS.

Stay tuned for results..

PS Note I haven't even touched recording sound off my VCR yet <g>.

Same connector for most Stereo VCR. Use only one connector for Mono
(leave the other hanging and turn off the unused input when recording
Mono on the PC.

I just downloaded Audacity* and jerry rigged input from my Headphone
socket in the Sony to the Line In in the dell. So I got a brief
recording.

I've saved the Test 1 in XP but can't quickly figure out how to burn
it to a CD.

Where please should I be looking? (I was contemplating Windows Media
Player???)

PS Don't worry, I'm buying the proper kit (red and black pointy wire
things that plug into my sony and then my dell Line in.)

*Very easy to record from btw, thanks again.

HEY!!!

It woirks !

Those cables and those little red and , umm whatever the other colour
was are all over the place y'know <g>.

I managed to record a half an LP of Crosby Stills and Nash and then
burn it onto a CD and it didn't sound half bad.

Now to perfection !!!!

(Pity there's no way to speed up the playing of an LP. 90 minutes is
still 90 minutes even these days).

My grateful thanks to all "above" who have advised me.

<Sigh> now I have to apply for a job instead of burning my favourite
bits of films (movies to you guys).

Thanks
