No, I am not. I'm distinguishing between narrowminded bullshit and
useful knowledge about music. Ain't no melody in Woody Guthrie's talking
blues. You're standing on a line across which lies racism. I've heard a
couple of rap songs I liked - from Arrested Development, IRRC. Doesn't
mean I dig it as a genre, but there is plenty of other popular music
that I generally dislike, too.

Byron Hurt has done a very interesting documentary about what's
happened with hip hop.

http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/hiphop/film.htm

If you can keep your mind open long enough to watch it, it's
pretty good. It also has enough content in it to teach
us who don't really know much about hip hop that it used
to be a lot less monoculture than it is now.

Johnny's in the basement mixing up the medicine, I"m on the pavement thinkin'
'bout the government. Man with a badge out, laid off, says he's got a bad
cough, wants to get it paid off. Look out kids, It's something you did, gotta
jump down a manhole, light yourself a candle. You don't want to be a bum you
better chew gum, the pump don't work cause the vandals stole the handle.

This is rap, by my definition. Not beautiful, but it communicates.

Yeah, and the guy that wrote that did a set at a major festival and some
old, established musician threatened to cut the electrical cables to the
new guy's gear with an ax because the old guy didn't like the way the
new guy was presenting his music.

Ahhh, good times!

Well, if I were you I'd erase your post before people realize you
don't know what melody is. First of all, there is melody and harmony
all through the picked chord changes and second there is melody in his
spoken word. He uses a speaking voice and follows melody all the way
through.

Now, not everyone knows definitions of things like a neapolitan 6
chord but most people know what melody is.

There is a study that shows point blank that it lowers IQ levels...
not kidding.

Do some songs contain rap - yes. Is rap music - not to me

Ty, with all due respect, there is no harmony now is there....

A painting communicates but its not music either

How much do you want? I think we got about 3 feet this winter, all told
(Not all at once, though). About 25 miles west of Chicago.

Actually it was because the sound was so distorted that he couldn't
understand
the words.
