I'm looking for a USB device that I can connect to my laptop that will
output the midi as real sound straight to an amplifier. Does a beast
like this exists or is there software that can do this. I did try the
Roland Virtual Sound Canvas software, the instruments still does not
sound real enough. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

xmplay: It's a free music player and they have a pluginon their web site
which can play midi files as soundfonts. I use it to preview
midi files and have a 100Mb soundfont loaded which makes the midi file sound
quite good when played back. So it's like a sound module for midi files.

Sorry, otherwise you might just want a sound module like Proteus which can
play your midi input as a live instrument

You need a soft synth that uses sound fonts. You
then need to find a sound font you like. There
are many, *many* fonts to choose from, and that
fact alone indicates that there is a matter of
personal preference as to which is best... or best
for any particular application, etc.

To get started on your quest, you might want to
look at SynthFont for the synth, which is free to
try and very inexpensive to buy. (Plus the author
is very helpful.) Then Google for "sound fonts"
to find a mind-numbing array of possibilities to
test.

Many fonts claim to specialize in certain types of
instruments, so if your compositions are mostly
focused on (say) piano, or strings, or whatever,
you could look at those "specialty" fonts first.

Best regards,
