Pioneer X-NM1 acting v. strangely

I have a Pioneer X-NM1. I bought this new in December 2002. It has
been functioning fine up until about 1 month ago. I have noticed
since then that the unit shows the following behavior:

The unit turns on from standby for no reason at apparently random
times of the day.

While listening to the radio on the unit, the station can
spontaneously change frequency. The volume can change also. The
frequency can then alternate between two different frequencies.

Sometimes the unit will not respond to commands from the remote
control and will often react differently to the command.

Is anybody familiar with this behavior?
What has caused the unit to function like this?
Any ideas on how can it be fixed.

Thanks
SB

When seemingly unrelated problems happen at the same time, look for
what they have in common. That means the control microprocessor,
the associated electronics, and the power supply to them. And that
latter part means checking for bad decoupling caps and bad solder joints
as well.

I absolutely hate working on this kind of consumer gear and it is usually
not worth the labour to repair. But I would first get the schematics
from Sam's Photofacts or the manufacturer and start looking around with a
scope on all the lines near the microprocessor.

sounds like a problem with the remote cont section,

is it an IR type?

try covering the senor with a piece of black tape, if that stops the
random behavior, then something is interfering with the remote..
