turntable pre amp explanation?

Hi-not sure if this is the right group for this question but here goes.I
want to buy a turntable reasonably compact for not very frequent listening
to.If I buy one with a pre amp does that mean that I can plug it straight
into speakers?thanks lots dawn

Sorry, the preamp only does some voltage amplification and
equalization. You still need an amplifier or receiver for power
amplification in order to drive speakers. Do you have something
specific in mind?

I believe the idea of the preamp is that you can plug into the AUX port of a
modern receiver
rather than the Phono inputs of an older receiver (phono inputs not
available on most modern units).

All turntables are compact enough to play 12" vinyl, but a preamp in not an
amplifier. A turntable has an arm but does not always come with a
cartridge. Years ago, some companies built a component with a tuntable
integrated. A good clue is to note that any turntable built into the top of
a receiver (amp/preamp/tuner) usually came with speakers matched to the
receiver's power supply. A preamp plugs into a power amplifier to which
speakers connect, the preamp is the component which has volume, balance, and
tone controls on it. P.
