For the life of me, I can't find anything wrong.
Nut I recently had to install everything anew (for the umpteenth time,
don't get me started) and now Cubase doesnt respond to varying
velocities.
I even drew a line in the edit window, letting velocity rise from 0 to
127 on a snare roll...but everything sounds equally loud.
No matter what VST module I use: Nexus2, Kontakt sampler, Predator....

Anybody have a bright idea?

Not a fix, but until you find one, you can always bounce your MIDI
track down to an audio track and draw a fade in the volume automation
window.

Not a bright idea, but if you say that you get the same issue with all
the vstI, I would start and look at the "midi filter" of cubase.

I Don't remember wher these setings are located but you'll find easily.
Remember: what is ticked is filtered. It means that if "note on
velocity" is ticked, it will not be transmitted.

Probably somewhere under "Program" - "Program settings" - "MIDI"

Thanks for the input, but velocity has effects different from
volume....

You're right, and the settings are in file->preferences -> MIDI
But they are all OK. Only SesEx is ticked.
Driving me mad!

An unwanted expression map perhaps? Other MIDI Transform functions could
do this, but it shouldn't happen on a shiny fresh track.
Play that snare roll again, but this time open a Midi Monitor on the
track. (It's under MIDI Inserts). Make sure it is on and that notes are
shown. As the notes roll by, is Value2 (velocity) what you expect? What
velocity is it, if it's all the same? 127? 64?
This would still give you no explanation though. Only whether the
"equalization" occurs before or after the MIDI monitor. I'll see if I
can come up with more ideas.

another not-so-bright idea:

About the programs you are playing (be it in kontakt or other vst-i),
are you sure that thay are set to respond to velocity. This is not a
given at all.
Many programs such as many synth or sometimes beat boxes, are set *not*
tp respond top velocity, in order to emulate old harware.
In Kontakt, for instance, you will not get a velocity/volume link unless
ther e is , fopr eaxh program, an "AMP" modulation set to=> velocity
with a positive value.

Have you tried it with some pianos, or anything that you can visualy
verify that it has a velocity controller set to modulate volume?
Of course, if you are talking about programs that would respond to
velocity before you reinstall everyhting, noneed to seek in this direction.
