I use an iRiver IFP-790. It's small, rugged, has a built-in mike, and will
record speech for 72 hours. Retail is $150. Of course it will also record
music in stereo of much higher fidelity. It has an FM radio, and it runs
off of a single AA cell. At any time, you can dump the contents into your
computer and burn it to a CD-R or just leave it on your hard drive.
This is the smallest, most convenient solution I've come up with so far,
although I imagine there are cheaper units out there.
