thanks for the help. here's another response I got from avsforum:
"Drag out the owner's manual for your 5650 and look on the specifacations
page and you'll find the bandwidth for the component switching. If it's
30mhz or so you're ok for 480p, 1080i usually wants 40mhz.
Some DLP sets will lag (video will be a bit behind audio) when fed component
video or any other analog video signal due to the extra time it takes to
process an incoming analog video signal to digital. This will occur whether
you go straight from the dvd player to the tv or use the receiver for
switching. Many newer receivers have an adjustable audio delay to compensate
for this.
