Looking for a good quality DAC with the ability to accept a 24/96 input signal, must have AES/EBU input and balanced analogue outputs. Onboard volume control and a headphone output would be nice to have too....

BTW - I'm not looking for a Benchmark DAC1, even though it meets the spec above.

Let me know what you've got and how much you are looking for.

    Thanks.

Well, the Behringer DEQ2496 meets your needs except for the onboard volume and headphones (it does have some volume adjustment though). Maybe it is not high-end enough though. It is very good however.

I'm quite taken by the Wadia 27ix at the moment.

The Wadia might be a bit too-high end... especially the price! And the reason I'm looking for 96Khz capable is to go on the end of a DEQ2496 - which is a totally amazing thing but I think its internal DACs can be improved on.

    Hi Alan,

How about a Lavry DA10? If it lives up to its publicity it'll be a real Benchmark beater. They're supposed to be shipping early December. (Obviously, therefore, I haven't heard it, but I quite fancy one myself.)

The benchmark is easily beaten and again internet hype has given it a well undeserved status IMO

Pardon me for mentioning it. I only did so because of the obvious similarities the Lavry DA10 has to it - i.e. it comes from a US company in the pro-audio sector, it has headphone and volume control facilities, and it is priced similarly. I haven't heard the Benchmark or the Lavry, and I make no assumptions about the quality of either.

I thought the Lavry was worth mentioning as the company has a very good reputation and the DA10 appears to meet all of Alan's requirements.

Ian Calm down my boy :) I wasn't having a dig at you (sorry if you thought I was  ) Its just the Benchmark, own 2 of them s can speak from expriance, they just don't ive up to the reviews thats all.
I've not heard Larvy, hopefully its better than BM, though I feel the Apogee mini dac is great for the cash streets ahead of the BM again similar money used.

The superDAC isn't really that different from the DAC in the DEQ2496 though is it. Just like a tweaked up version.

You could have the DEQ modded. :JPS:

Ah Tone, I nearly bought the Behringer, thanks for the tip! Would be interested in this studio red box thing when you find the info.

I guess you've probably already worked out what I'm up to. :)

What's your opinon on the Midiman Flying Cow box?

I think Nic Rhodes had a look/listen at/to the Flying Cow. I almost did, if only to have in same system as the Flying Moles! In the end I came accross a sale of the ADX add on to the Dax Decade through which analogue replay from cassette player sounds much better than it should - absence of pre-amp?

Can this unit do both A/D and D/A conversion at the same time?
E.G. could I feed my analogue source into it, it converts to digital and outputs to AES/EBU, Which I connect to the Behringer, then feed AES/EBU output from the Behringer to the digital input on the device for D/A conversion and thence to my amp?
