Hmm....I got the same list as penance, methinks the "near you" bit is somewhat bogus.

OTOH, near the school I went to in Saffron Walden (Essex) was a place called Ugley Green, home of the Ugley Green Women's Institute :D

Also, when I lived in Portland, Oregon (in the US) there was a place not that far away called Wanker's Corner. Spurred on by that I looked up Wanker in the phonebook and found 4 or 5 people with that surname. The best was: "Capt. Duane E. Wanker" - I'd love to see him go through passport control at Heathrow...

Michael.

There's a village called Linn in canton Aargau just off the Basel-Zürich Autobahn. I was hoping it would have a Tiefenbrunn somewhere, but it's so tiny that it barely has a Dorfstrasse (Village Street) and the nearest village Tiefenbrunn is SW of Munich.

Doh! I got the same list as penance because the link posted already includes his postcode  . I naively thought that it worked out your location based in IP address or something clever...

Right, using the postcode of the place I stay at in London I get:

Cock Pond
1.6 miles

Mincing Lane
5.5 miles

Pratt's Bottom

Titsey Park
15.1 miles

Tyttenhanger

And you lot go on about funny scottish names, like

Auchentoshan.
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Aberdeen
Perth

Suppose these would be funny if your native language was Swaheli:D

I think its more Scottish surnames tbh
Like Mc Donald
When i was in Whitorn, looking around an old graveyard, like ya do. I stumbled on a grave stone with the name of Ronald Mc Donald on it :D
Though it was dated late 17 hundreds, guess he hadnt discovered burgers at that time.

What about Scottish/Irish names like

McClummpher, McGaughey, McGibbon, McGorrist, McGoldrick, McInnes, McGurk, McIlwhaine, McIlwheatrick, McLardy, McMinn, McNab, McNutt.

All true all from my work database basically all medical professionals in scotland and northern ireland, we also have a Dr Duck in scotland, and some guy called Ronald McDonald was arrested today after holding a seige in an old nuclear bunker.

The reason why you get a lot of odd names ie Tavish MacTavish, Donald McDonald is very similar to icelandic names Mc or Mac meaning son of or clan, so John the Smith has son called John who also joins family business and so name perpetuates, Scottish ones don't sound so funny when you say Donald son of Donald...., or maybe they do. The pet hate with most Mc's Mac's is getting second capital letter after "c" McDonald, MacDonald

Eh? But the second capital is standard practice! I know, I have one of those Mc names (Irish in my case). Or have I misunderstood you and you're saying that we don't like a small letter after Mc/Mac (which we don't). There are some names, especially in Ireland, where the names have merged and the second capital has disappeared, e.g. Macaffery.

McDonald is actually the most common of the Mc names in Scotland, although I understand that the most common name in Scotland is Smith!

The thing that I don't like is the Swiss propensity to split the name into two. Now, it does happen in some Irish Mac names (like the former Chief of Staff of the IRA, who was Séan Mac Stiofán - actually he was John Stephenson originally, but that's how it comes out in Irish), but it's not that common. Even years of McDonald's haven't stopped Swiss officialdom changing my McDeafasapost to Mc Deafasapost and then writing to me "Dear Herr Deafasapost..."
