I've just used some in a volume pot shunt mod , but they sound terrible , quite bright and harsh .

Does anyone know if they improve with a few hours on them or is that just the way they sound .

Is there a better ( warmer ) resistor that anyone can recommend .

Many people go for Vishay resistors due to their sound quality.

They don't cost the earth either.

I did fit tantalum capacitors to bypass the opamps on my cd player to good effect though but they seemed fine from the off.
    Good luck.

tantalums do start off being harsh but settle down after burning in

Had you tried the shunt mod previously with other resistors?
In other words are you sure it is the resistors & not the mod causing it.

Thanks for the response fella's .

The tants have improved slightly , only got about 12 hours on them
so I think they will be ok in the end .

I don't think it's the mod , the clarity of the sound has improved since bypasing the Alps blue , but at first the high frequency's had a very hard sound to them , but that seems to be smoothing out .

Zanash , thanks for the offer but I'll see how the tants are when they get some more hours on them .

A quick update for anyone who may be interested .

The tant's definately improve with usage , they have now lost any harshness and sound superb .

But if anyone is thinking of using them be aware they sound awfull at first and need a lot of burning in .

I missed you question when you first posted it.

The Tants do settle down a bit after a while, but you have also gotten used to them. I have found that high quality carbon resistors have a much nicer sound (sweeter and warmer) in an attenuator than tants or metal films.

    Cheers
