I wondered if anyone in the Uk has tried the Lavry DA10 dac. What I've read has piqued my curiosity. I was interested in a Benchmark DAC1 but there seems to be a consistent reaction to it as being great for analytical work but a bit stark for relaxed enjoyment. What I've read about the DA10 sounds like a different ball game. So anyone here tried it?

Cheers

Chris

I'm bumping this! All the reviews I've seen have been in the pro-audio forums, usually vs the DAC1 and usually very positive. I'm quite curious but since I've never heard a DAC1 and think that many modern CDs sound ropey as hell, I'm not sure I trust the reviewers' reference points. I like the idea of re-clocking though. It's ugly and balanced outputs would require me to knock up yet more cables, but I could be swayed. Any opinions out there?

I have the Lavry and the DAC1 here at the moment. I'm letting my high end CD player go and keeping the Lavry. The differences between the DAC1 and Lavry are small. The DAC1 has a slightly leaner presentation, which may suit if you think your system is on the warmer side of neutral. I would let the boffins argue over which is the more accurate, I prefer listing to my ripped CDs through the Lavry. Astonishing bit of kit for the price.

I wouldn't worry about cables, Dave at Flashback Sales made me up a great pair of XLR to RCA phonos for about £25. You need to change jumper settings as per the manual if you use it in unbalanced mode like I am.

Chris Hi I have heard the Lavry 924 at length and that is excellent, I believe Dan lavry was more or less forced to bring out the DA10 to compete with the Benchmark, Andrew at 'Sound Tools' is a very nice guy give him a ring, it's only £600 definately worht a listen ,Keith.

Listen to both

I've auditioned both and preferred the nakedness of the dac1-the differences were as previously noted quite small-but which to my ears came down to a mildly 'tailored-sweetened' sound in the DA10 and a, again its a subjective call, leaner slightly more honest dac1.
I had to choose-I found both excellent value, punching way above there weight. You can't lose either way.

Just listening to a new DAC from Mike Stahl , I think its the best digital replay I have heard.

I suppose the analogue output is as important as the dsp?

At least as important, all off the shelf chip dacs sounding exactly the same these days. ;-)
