    Hi,

Yet their speakers do not fulfill the "pflichtenheft" (a formal objective specification which sets out exactly what conditions a product has to fulfill to qualify in order to be purchased) of the German Federal Radioservices. And there are manufacturers of monitors that do qualify and also have a well respected client list.

But what the heck, Yamaha's MS-10 has a "well respected client list".

Thorsten, I agree with you, I'm not a fan of the ATC sound either.

Tony and Paul trolling about ATC. Who'd 'a thought it?

They make the best speakers I've ever heard, by a long way.

The fact that these two obscure internet nerds who have axes to grind don't like them is rather unimportant.

"ATC hand builds the most accurate professional reference loudspeakers in the world."

Somehow (though I've yet to hear a pair) that makes ATC speakers seem suddenly more attractive.

    You are joking, aren't you?

If you are not joking, kindly explain to us why it is that well-known companies with reputations for good sound quality to uphold (e.g. Chandos, Sony, and many others) choose ATC monitor systems in their studios.

I really don't care whether anyone here "likes" ATCs or not. There is little about them to "like" or "dislike" because the sound you get out of them depends on setup and source/preamp.

I know I'm going to regret asking this but without using a like/dislike judgement, how does one assess whether the sound produced by the ATCs is suitable?

One instinctively knows when something is right. They reveal incredible amounts of low-level detail, and separate it from more dynamic sounds. You can follow instruments and tunes which were previously buried in the mix. You can follow lyrics which were previously garbled/too quiet to hear properly. Etc.

A friend recorded an acoustic guitar band in my living room. We played the recording back to the band. Game over.

    Hi,

That is your opinion, to which you are entitled.

That is a claim that is highly unsubstantiated and best considered the usual marketing bumpf. There are a number of inherent design features with ATC Monitors (and many others using similar principles) that contradict accuracy strongly, unless utlised strictly within an acoustic non-envoironment room (a fancy way of saying anechnonic chamber).

    No, I am completely serious.

Probably for the same reasons they keep Yamaha NS-10's around.

Actually, Sony uses them for DVD Mastering, not music. And to claim that Sony Music is "a company with reputations for good sound quality to uphold" seems to belong rather into the realm of fiction instead of fact. Just listen to the sound on the CD's of Sony's headlining acts.

That's fine. I think we're just using different terms to describe the same thing; my 'like' being your 'knowing when something is right'. I am seriously thinking about auditioning active ATCs as a means of avoiding multiple box syndrome.

What are these? And who make more accurate monitors than ATC?
Well, your quote makes little sense, as it's the sound quality of the DVDs which we should be assessing, not the CDs.

I know that you are trolling, and there's little point in spending any more time on you.

    Ciao yourself.

    Hi,

Well, the first question one might ask is if what interests you is to listen to the music or to the speakers. And you may ask if you wish for a system that is accurate or one that is not.

The questions one might ask is if the Speakers are time/impulse coherent (which ATC's are not) to ensure transient sounds are accuratly reproduced, if they offer controlled diretivity to promote the recorded music over the room reflections (which ATC's speakers do not offer), if they offer low compression and distortion (where ATC are a little above average but well below the State of the Art of what can be done) and so on.

Once one has asked these questions one may find that a given (monitor) speaker from a given company performs very much like any generic home speaker, which is of course intenional as the question a mastering engineer often asks is "what will it sound like on Joe averages stereo".

Now if you like to persue an accurate reproduction a good starting point are the kind of minimum perfomance specifications set out by the german IRT as recommendations and usually adopted as performance requirements by the Federal Radio Network.

    Ciao T
