Well, it's your decision, but 100£ is a fair amount of money; just think how many CDs you could get for that money... Get 3000£ and buy a decent amplifier... Another 1500£ and a good source and, dependening on your tastes, a good pair of speakers...

Just my two cents.

I fancy music gets cleaner with a dedicate source. But not - never - worth 100£.

I take it that you dont believe in cleaning up the mains?

What if you never get the true potential out of the £1500 source, the £3000 amp and £1500 speaker you recommend due to crap mains?

RDS, the difference that cleaner juice makes would really surprise you greatly, just think blacker blacks, better 'welling up' tighter and cleaner bass, more texture in the vocal range, the list goes on, I wouldn't even contemplate a system with out mains conditioning and seperate feeds now, my next system will have this built into the utility room, along with two 5 kv trannies and dedicated trick wiring to the 4 outlets only, one each for transport/dac and 2 amps it really does make a serious difference.WM

 

RdS - I think you might be surprised what a good isolation transformer could do to your system I myself am seriously considering a Trichord 1000KVA conditioner but as joolsburger pointed on on another thread "it is many shekels" A DIY solution may be more economical...

On this particular item, looks like a good price - but who knows what quality of transformer is in that distinctly DIY looking case?

i notice a bit of a change of heart , WM.
i thought i was the only one who liked big isolation trannies
i still think if i was ever to be in a position to do a custom install , i,d use a 1 kva to supply each component other than a 2kva for the amp .
mind you i,d also make sure they were hidden away .

 

it may be a good buy but only if it's electrically safe, plus the fact that to hide it under the stairs wouldmean lots of rewiring for me/most. rds - the trichord box is worth a shot - and has a money back guarantee if you don't like. It's also smaller

It's DC on the mains supply that's a major cause of transformer hum, isn't it?

Well, I have my subwoofer connected to a Trichord and the transformers inside the subs still buz (as does the transformer inside the Trichord at certain times).

Well. You made me think. I had a 'filter' of some kind and it didn't help the sound at all. Then I fed the system from another socket, and it became cleaner. After that, my dealer brought something - I don't think it's a transformer, it's a kind of DIY conditioner - it did change the sound (better basses, cleaner trebles, and so on) but it was so cheap I think he didn't even charge for it.

You may well be right and I'm probably wrong. Perhaps I even have a mains conditioner and don't know it Anyway, 100£ seems a lot of money to pay for a plug, and I was speaking in the context of the Russ Andrews kind of material. Of course, the item mentioned by the thread starter probably isn't a plug. Somebody enlighten me, please?

I am a big believer in a mains condioning I live in a heavily populated area and my supply changes according to times of the day. If I had a £2000 system, £300 would be spent on mains conditioning.

Whats the point on having A £1000 amp if its been fed on a cheap £1 distrubution block? As the mains input will not be stable.

Just got the new catalogue of audiophile candy (worth getting posted IMHO - its always full of new kit to read about)

Theres a brand new Isotek 2K device in there for £1495 - with a warranty, a known brand and it looks better/smaller too...

Suddenly £1000 for a garden shed job doesnt look so rosy IMHO
