Here's an idea! Feel free to add to the thread any recommendations you have for beers/ale that you enjoy. Have just been over the pub and can definately recommend Exmoor Beast. A superb ale, with a nice malty taste. The only problem is that it slips down too smoothly :D. It's 6.6%, BTW!

    Also recommend:

    Old Speckled Hen
    Bass
    London Pride
    Cornish Rebellion

and here you go for a taste of whats on offer (pasted from the web site.......)

"Beer at the Wookey Hole Inn

8 Belgium beers on draught, including Liefman's Frambois, la Chouffe, Leffe, de Koninck and Hoegaarden, plus many more in bottles. We have at least 4 guest ales on at any one time, with the famous Wook Ale always available. There's Amstel from Belgium plus Red Stripe and Kirin, plus all your normal suspects. Cider heads are catered for with the award-winning Old Rosie and Stowford Press. We also have some unusual wines from Canada and Argentina and a range of chilled sherries by the glass and half bottle – all served with our special brand of humour and sunshine...."

do yourself a favour - give it a go and enjoy.

Another Belgian to look out for is Bush. At 13.5%, it's not one for drinking large amounts of (at least not if you wish to be capable of movement the next day), but a very fine beer.

Hoegaarden Grand Cru ?? I've never seen that :( how's that different to regular Hoegaarden?

Of course Hoegaarden is next to impossible to find here in Portugal, esp. on tap but on my regular trips to London I've noticed that fewer and fewers pubs have it aswell - WTF? And it's not just Hoegaarden either, hardly any pubs in London seem to have any kind of wheat beer anymore

It's by far my favourite kind of beer so it's rather annoying.

    Michael.

seems like belgium beer is very popular in lowestoft, whilst up there last week i found 1 pub stocks around 30 diffrent bottled belguim beers plus 2 or 3 on draft, another with around 10- diffrent bottled types and a cafe which claims to stock 85 diffrent belguim beers, will find out how true this claim is when i permantly move there (tommorow:D ) suprisingly the local brew, admans, is pretty scarce

if youre after an every day beer (literally in my case! hic!) tescos own brand 'draught' beer has a widget, and is a nice pint. Tastes as good as a pint of ale from the pub to me.

Especially good because you get 12 cans for £6.49!

    :D :D :D

    michael,
if you haven't already, check out belgo centraal in earlham st, covent garden. the food there is good and they've got a massive selection of belgian beers to buy in a little shop next door.
i believe there are also a couple of belgian beer bars run by the same company knocking about london too, never been to one though.
    cheers

Grand Cru is sweeter, less floury and rather stronger (8.7%) than regular Hoegaarden. It isn't common (majestic wine merchants had some, but sold out now. I picked up one case, but it wasn't cheap at £30!)

Julian - I know Belgo Centraal but haven't been there for ages. Thanks for the reminder - must go again next time I'm in London. Is Belgo Nord up in Camden still around aswell?

Sounds like I've got some serious drinking to do :D Indoors tonight though with a few tins of Carlsberg, so that will do for now, with a few tunes.

"Bishops Farewell (OG 1046 ABV 4.6%). It was originally produced for the 1995 Peterborough Beer Festival in honour of Bill Westwood, Bishop of Peterborough, who was about to retire when he opened the festival. A light golden beer that is decidedly refreshing. Now a permanent fixture of the Oakham Ales Portfolio.

Overall Winner, Rugby Beer Festival, 1998
Best Bitter, Peterborough Beer Festival, 1995"

    {from http://www.pcamra.demon.co.uk/oakham/}

or Co-ops "Freeminer" bottled beer at home

After tonight I must recommend a decent pint of Abbot Ale, preferably straight out of the barrel.

Else Black Sheep, Hobgoblin and Waggledance get my vote.

    Hoegarden?
    Bah foreign shite!
