Just wondering what you guys would regard as the best music to test pace rythym and timing. A thread rory posted about Moloko got me thinking about this, and unless I've got it horribly wrong, I reckon good old trance / dance music is the best for it, the sound of the beat seems to be a giveaway for me. Or have I got it wrong?

sorry cant help with a decent answer, in all honesty i think it is important to hear the music you enjoy as opposed to something that picks on a particular aspect

If a system PRaTs well you should not be able to get through the track without :pRaT:

    Me too! :MILD:

Oh, uhhh, on topic, a great album for testing a system's foot-tapping abilities is the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Can sound tiring on the wrong system, but on the right system (/me winks at Bub) it gets the foot tapping and the head bobbing like nobody's business.

Best album would have to be -

Robbie Williams - ''swing when you're winning''

If you like it, you are a PRaT

    :D

I'd say the only way to test PRaT...

...is to stick on some AC/DC and invite Angus Young round and ask him.

My recommendation would be Soft Machine Third, the first 20 minutes or so should do it;)

I'm with Paul's original assumption; so most of it is synthesized, but something like B.P.Empire by Infected Mushroom or Full on 6 - trance waves will REALLY show off a system that can do PRaT - due to the huge dynamics and very clean beats - if a system can't corner on a dime then the bass will overshoot and sound slower and "broken".

The only problem with trance is that the PRaT shows even on shoddy stereos. Slow stuff is hard to figure out PRaT-wise though, though in my experience if a system can do fast properly, it GENERALLY does slow as well - though I can see why some people say Naim (at least the older stuff) can't "do" classical - since Naim loves PRaT - it kind of "hurries along" mellower classical stuff. I like that though...

DavidD, are you and bumboy homosexual lovers by any chance?

Some good suggestions there, I'll try and get some of these tracks from P2P. It seems you have the same idea as me Dom, I've always thought of systems that make dance music sound fast (as it should be) as ones that can PRaT, but I'll check those other tracks out too.

Exactly - and you don't neccessarily need that bass for the dancability either - my Rega Kytes' fronted rig in Reading used to PRaT like a DEMON, even with the Pioneer 609 CDRW as the source :)

I just wish more clubs would use that rationale to improve their PAs - the one in Fabric is too boomy (in general), the one in EQ is boom'n'tizz'n'deafening, the one in the Stratford Rex is perfect.

Why club owners assume everyone needs that volume, together with gross clipping, bottoming-out bass and treble so fierce you can't even figure out what people are saying after 10 mins exposure, is beyond me...
