Does anyone have a recommendation for a good recording of Rimsky-Korsakov's Sherazade? I see that the BBC have a review of the Kirov Orchestra on Philips which they seemed to like. Anyone else got a favourite recording?

The Kirov/Gergiev one is good, quite raw open sound too which adds to the excitement. I prefer it to Mackerras/LPO on Telarc which used to get good reviews.

Beecham's 1958 EMI recording on CD still enjoys playing time at my place, and shares honours with Mackerras. I haven't heard Gergiev yet, and must do so. I like his less than "couth" approach to some of the Russian classics, and I wonder if Shererazade can stand up to this.

If you like that one, MDT are doing an offer and all the living stereo SACD's are £7. In fact I'm going to do an order now!

I have the gergiev version on SACD and its FLIPPIN' AMAZING. I feel emotionally drained after listening to it, its that intense.

    Absolute highest possible recommendation.

    DT

Though apparently the living stereo sheherazade (isn't there's an mfsl mastered version out there too somewhere?) is supposed to be very good.

The Stokowski "Rhapsodies" is a longstanding favourite of mine. Fine recording, terrific playing - and as a rather mixed bag, perhaps likely to be overlooked?

Oh, and of course the Reiner Pictures at an Exhibition/Night on Bare Mountain et al disc - still my favourite version of Pictures after 30 years of trying various alternatives!

The Arthur Fielder/Boston Pops/Hi-Fi Fielder SACD is absolutely amazing too - absolutely incredible dynamic range. OK, so its a bit "orchestral fireworks" in nature, and not something you'd relax to, but its highly entertaining nonetheless. WOW

I've now had a chance to listen to the LV Reiner Sheherazade SACD. I was most impressed by the sheer scale and dynamics it captures - the speed and attack of the percussion in the storm is amazing. I guess my reaction to the performance itself was a bit tempered by the fact that I have listened to (and only to) my Dutoit/Montreal/Decca version countless times, so it's hard to be objective about changes to my benchmark. The Reiner version is faster and more energetic, but in many parts of the work I prefer the grand, expansive, somehow more exotic nature of the Dutoit - and the recording on CD is equally impressive.
