    Guys, stop bickering.

Anyway, sod big Tannoys, I just visited a mate who just completed these reproduction JBL's (they're 4345's - only about 100 were ever made - 101 now!!). And no, I'm not a midget, these things look even bigger in the flesh. Feature one of the best 18" drivers ever made IMO. Talk about dynamics...

Isn't anyone going to comment on the stands (or even the model, only kidding Andy:D)?

The stands (are those i-beams?) lead to the first case I can recall of my very tolerant girlfriend saying 'you're not thinking of doing THAT are you...'. I think I'll stick with Tannoys for now (assuming I can get them to work, that is). Replacement crossover in the post...

Yes, I had a sneak preview on the weekend. We were talking about the best way to dampen down his proposed enclosure (a big issue when things get this big) and there are some really cool ideas floating around.

The last time I was that intimidated by a speaker were the Everest DD55000's I saw at an 80's Hi-Fi show. I woke in the morning on his couch with these about 5 feet from my face, heaven! I have a feeling I may end up owning something from JBL 43xx series myself someday. Or maybe something from the K2 range as I definitely won't be happy until I've had some time with decent horns.

I had another look at the photo and I look like I'm about 4"9'...I'm actually 5"10'.

Anyway, sorry to go off topic but.

Yes we've been having a few brainstorming sessions. The latex is my favourite at the moment but frighteningly expensive to do properly.

The K2 gives a very different presentation to the 43** series in my experience, and to be honest, the Be units and horns in the 9800 aren't all that fantastic. The 1500AL bass unit is a beauty though....

Oh Latex, sounds sexy...I reckon "constrained layer damping" has merit?

I wish Rich wasn't (thinking) of going to Canada, I'd like him to build something for me one day.

I knew they'd come in handy one day...

They're on temporary duty impersonating real speakers Julian. Why? You feeling optimistic?

Expensive. You need to experiment to get the mix right unless you are copying someone else. Seriously, trying out that construction with carbon and foam, you wouldn't believe the differences in quality depending on the thicknesses employed.

Originally it was patented by Sony who alledgedly spent $275,000 getting the cabinet damping right for the SS-9es. I'd love to do it but it's very unpredicatable. Not sure it is optimal for DIY.

Richard is really enthusiastic and I reckon his new cabs are going to be great.

Finally some REAL speakers for a change. I am sick to death of seeing pissy little 2-way standmounts.

    What's the LF driver?

I'm just in there for scale...a bit photo shy me. Was going to wear the Peter Gabriel concert t-shirt I bought the night before to look a complete doofus (that's why I was at Rich's :))

JBL 1500AL. I've got another pair Richard is having from me. The horns on the floor are JBL 435be/H9800 - those on top are TAD.

    :D

Understandably too Murray. Even I can point out about a dozen things that are wrong with them.
