Are you surprised?! Isn't this why alot of those guys write in the first place, so they can get freebies?!?!?!

...although they will swear blind that they do not accept free gift's for good reviews,...yeah right!

Most reviewers I have ever met come across as just waiting for the opportunity to brag about their own equipment.

although I am sure there are ethical boundaries journalists can cross, getting freebies is surely an acceptable perk of the job

Of course it could be that they were so impressed that they actually wanted to own the units?

Yeah, getting the freebies in and of itself is all well and good, but the journalistic code of ethics dictates that people like Roy Gregory (who is nothing more than just a journalist) must detail all of the freebies which they get from the manufacturers who they are also writing about, so that the public can make informed decisions about what the journalist in question is telling us. Roy Gregory hasn't done this - in fact he has denied this kind of accusation on numerous occasions, either directly or indirectly. The conclusion that we can draw from this is that Roy Gregory has something to hide, and is very likely being dishonest. To me this essentially means that RG isn't a journalist at all, he's just another f*cking salesman

The only conclusion you can draw is you don't know all the facts,so no conclusion can be made. You could just as easily make an assumption RG just believes its none of our business.

Come clean about what? Your imagination is running wild. For all you know he went out and bought the gear himself,or maybe he got the gear cheaper because he has contacts for ex-dem,who knows, but you seem determined to presume he is guilty of something.

You do a search on RG,look for what gear he uses, and then accuse him of not only getting the gear buckshee but also deliberately favouring the same gear in his reviews?

wow, anyway, you killed Elvis,go and hand yourself in.

    Hi,

It seems that some people have it in for Roy Gregory. What has he done to people? Is it because he waxes lyrically about expensive cables? (Nordost) Why is his mag sleezy?

In a lot of fields, there are freebies, jollies and perks. Hifi is no different. Most journalists get some sort of perks. Very few journalists come clean about every thing.

I wrote an review for a magazine once. It reviewed a club night. I had plenty of perks that night. In my (night) job as a dj, I get loads of perks. Usually free records and T-shirts. I get free entry to gigs from promo companies trying to promote their acts. I have also worked in the Hifi industry and recieved many perks.

Hifi reviewers may get stuff on a long term loan, short term loan, free, prototype or get stuff at a cheap price. If a reviewer likes a product, it may be because it's good. It maybe because it's in his or hers interest to say it's good. But is the same with must things that gets a write up.

At the end of the day, you don't have to buy the product. You should use your ears and your wallet. Having looked at the list of his equipment list, I have heard a number of it sounding very good.

Well, at least on Hifiplush they publish the details of the reviewers' systems, so you can see where personal preferences lie. I think that's a good thing.
I doubt hifi journalism is worse than most other forms of magazine journalism in respect of freebies and junkets; probly better in many respects as there is a *lot* less money involved, and these days very few writers on hifi do it full time.
That said, trust your own ears and don't believe the hifi mags (or the forums, or your mate down the pub). Enjoy the mags as 'adult entertainment' and judge them on the quality of the porn :)

But what RG believes is irrelevant, like I said before, the journalistic code of ethics dictates that he disclose the relevant information about his purchases/freebies. And if he does in fact believe it to be none of our business, then why has he posted his entire system details on the HiFi+ website and in the magazine, numerous times?

eh? You state he should disclose his system then say he has then ask why he has? This arguememt has slipped from the purely fanciful to the completely fanatical.

i think there is a bit of the green monster in there somewhere too saab.
if you are ovine enough to believe everything you read in the glossies and purchase based solely on a reviewers recommendation without listening for yourself then you deserve the system you get.
    cheers

I'd allways understood it that, some companies/importers will not do a deal, some "forget" to pick kit up, and others offer them a very good reduced price, one of the perks as far as I see, if i was in their position I'd do the same, again I read the reviews with a pinch of salt, if they give a good review it may get on my shortlist, but I mostly read mags, for the eyecandy/entertainment value.

You seem so suprised. Some of the finest gear doesn't even make it into the glossy mags. Wake up and smell the coffee.
