    DAC's broken:cry:

To be precise the optical socket on my Entech DAC broke when I unplugged/replugged the fibre cable. Anyone know if it's possible to get hold of a spare? Replacing it doesn't seem that difficult.

Dev is it one of these sockets that you need to replace? http://www.elfa.se/images/highres/h10828.jpg

If so then go to www.elfa.se and type toslink into the search and then choose the second hit in the returned list.
They were about the only electronics supplier in my list of DIY suppliers that appeared to stock such things. I'll keep rooting around and see if I can find anyone else.

    Edit:

Digi Key also stock the Toshiba toslink transmitters/receivers

Cheers for the pictures Dev, from what I can gather that is a Toshiba RX176 toslink fiber optic receiver module. And I have managed to find this stockist of them in the UK http://www.sc-elec.demon.co.uk/torx.htm. I'll keep digging around and see if I can find anyone else that carries them. Hope this helps.

Thanks BL21DE3 (or it is Mr BL21DE3?:D ), really appreciate it. It looks exactly like the Toshiba RX176, but it doesn't have the Toshiba label on it. Still the number is the same and it looks identical so that surely can't be a coincidence.

Thanks very much for your help.

    Hi BL21DE3,

On the home page of the link you posted, there is a notice saying :-

"November 16th - I have stopped selling the modules and ICs. If I start again I will post a message here."

So I guess I'm out of luck here, but thanks to you I can Google for other stockists now that I know the part number.

Oops, serves me right for thinking I'd got it all sorted :). According to some of the folks at DIYAudio.com you could substitute the TORX179 for the TORX176, with the 179 being the new 'improved' version with a higher bandwith (12.8 Mb/s compared to 6 Mb/s) but to all intents and purposes identical. Hope this helps, as RX176's seem to be a little thin on the ground.

Found a couple of suppliers in the US for the RX179., none for the RX176:( . It's only $3.67, but the postage is $6.00 and $5 handling. There must be suppliers in this country for this?

    P.S. anyone dealt with Digi-Key?

P.P.S. Just found their UK site:eek:

Dev, never dealt with Digi Key but be according to their UK website they have a £10 handling charge on orders under £75 and the shipping rate is a flat £12 . ELFA (www.elfa.se) stock the TORX179 (Part No. 75-365-43) at 3.04 euros plus VAT with delivery at 12 euros, so you'd be looking at around £12 inc p&P and VAT. I'll keep looking to see if I can find a UK stockist fo you.

Just took delivery of the TORX179 and gues what?, it doesn't fit

For a start it has only 3 legs, it's about 2mm narrower and it has 2 plastic pins for clipping into the PCB, (the 176 has 2 metal pins to solder it to the PCB). To rub salt to wounds it cost me over £28. £2.06 for the part and the rest for shipping and handing.

    Dev,

I hate to see a grown man cry, package it up and send it to me and I'll do it for you, might help me overcome the prospect of 2 weeks worth of speaker cable construction. T.

Jolly decent of you big boy, much appreciated. I'll send it as soon as I can, but I have a question (or 2). What will you do? hammer it into shape and fit it or (as I suspect) do you have a spare TORX176? If you have a spare 176, wouldn't it be easier to post that to me than me posting the whole unit to you?

Please PM your address (I know again, sorry!).

Hi, know this is an old thread, but bassically my problem:
I use a stienberg vsl2020 adat audio card, for my home recording studio. It bassically uses 2 adat optical ins and 2 adat optical outs to transfer 16 channles of audio in and out. however, one of the inputs on the card was giving m trouble, and on closer inspection i found that 2 of the pins on one of the rx176 inputs had snapped somehow. I've removed the offending rx176 (it was stopping my computer starting up) but im now without any form of recording input and have work coming up....
I need to find an rx176 asap, or something similar which does thesame job and has the same pin layout. Ive been searching madly for 2 days and cant find anything :(
any ideas and help reeeeaalllly appreciated
    cheers
