The power output of a CD laser is extremely low and is a very long way off being able to damage the CD.

Over what time frame? How have you eliminated other variables?

    How have you eliminated:

    Mains variation
Hearing variation (depending on time of day, what else you have heard during the day... did you have prolonged exposure to loud noise or continuous noise of a particular frequency, etc)
    Temperature
    Background noise variation

Yes. The high-end Krell transports use a "death ray" laser based on NASA's Star Wars technology which provides great dynamics but melts CDs after a few hours' play.

    Pete,

I do believe your developing a sense of humour, I'd be careful, you'll be buying cables next :D
Prehaps the laser we 'taken over' by bush's new mind control influence weapons of mass hystira designed to ursurpt poor unsuspected indivduals who don't appreicate Micky Mouse ?

Paint your CDs with varnish in future, for protection against nasty CD players. I've heard some people comment this adds glare to the sound but I think it's all in their head.
