Right - I'm ready to buy now but no bugger seems to be offering this baby at anything less than the rrp. Hifibitz throw in a 1m True Colours Industries Constrictor Mains Powerlead that they normally sell for £89.99 but I'd need the 2m one which would cost an extra £60 (and I could buy a Eupen 2m power lead for £60 anyway).

I guess I can always speak nicely to Radfords and see if they will knock off 5% or something, especially as I know what I want and won't be using any of their time for demos.

However, I wondered if any of you guys knew of anywhere doing these for a bit under rrp.

    Thanks in anticipation.

No-one - surely there must be some dealers willing to know 5% off - we're talking about a £1K player and me not needing to take up any of their time auditioning.

And what about the True Colours Industries Constrictor mains powerlead - anyone encountered them before?

I've owned one of these and can honestly say, there's better available for the moeny. If its the ability to run directly into a power amp, then unless you import from the USA, you've not many alternatives. But if you just want the best sub 1K performance, look elsewhere. I know the definitive player at that level, but yo'll need to pm me for its i/d.

Matt, I bet you could get 15%.

Why not call a few dealers, say you have 850 in cash, take it or leave it.

Call 10, I bet you get at least one 'take it!' !!

    :)

It's exactly that Jack. If I had £2K to spend then I'd go for a used Wadia 301 but I don't so the Quad looks like the best bet. Apparently it did surprisingly well in a recent Zerogain bake-off.

    matt,
one did do very well at my bakeoff but it was running using cutom i/c's, a trick mains cord and an isolation platform. i'm not sure if zanash had had the lid off but it seems likely given what he did to a denon he owned.
dealer markup is close to 50% on new kit so if you're hard arsed about it you can get some good deals. cdp's are tricky 2nd hand as they can be used hard, i'd go for an ex demo model or something where the history is provable - or it's still within warranty and the warranty is transferable. but you'll get more bang for your buck if you go ex demo or used. have a look at audiogon there are quite a few us players with variable outs.
    cheers

I suggest you give JJ at SoM a call. He's often happy to do a deal, or 'special purchase' as they seem to be called. Timing is right too, with his summer sale now on.

Hi I traded in my two box Wadia for the CDP99 and am delighted with it. I paid £900 from Arif at KJ West One London. Mention me as he is a mate and I do not know if the £900 was a discount because I have bought lots of stuff from him. Dominic

Thanks for the advice guys - sound like I need to start making some phone calls.

I'm assuming SoM is Sound of Music in Kent?

The very same. And 'JJ' is John Jeffries.

Let us know what you come up with.

    Matt,

As you've made your mind up re the 99, you could always try what I do when I'm after a piece of kit cheap. Stick a wanted ad on the Hififorsale site. Dealers do view it and it wont cost you a penny.

    just found this old thread.....
has anyone had a chance comparing 99 CD-P against the new transport version 99 CD-P II. the later stayed in my system a couple of weeks as the owner was abroad but recently i had to give it back.
i still haven't seen it s/h, while right now i can get (without a dem) an older version for reasonable money (say 350quid)
do they differ significantly or should i wait more?

    mine was straight .......

The 99 will not suite every one but it has seriously upset some expencive cdp's....then you consider its flexability with its dac and preamp function. The New transport is supposed to elevate it to demi god status ....but I've not heard that yet. I'm going to get the custom transport latter this year with luck.

the only mods I've done on mine are to add a coax out.

Zanash's 99 certainly gets my thumbs up. Bearing in mind that it doesn't just sound great, but is also functionally strong, bit of a no brainer at it's price point.

why? CD-P II that was on my place attracted more followers than any other component we tried at the same time...?
