It is very nice, one of my favourite easy listening albums when nothing too heavy is in order. It features heavily in Vanilla Sky if you've seen that...

Classed as doom metal this was a complete eye opener for me. There are no drums, no vocals, just bass and guitar riffs at and incredibly slow speed. I can honestly say I've never heard anything so slow, deep and droney, I had to check that it really played on 33rpm. It's a beautiful double lp on 220g vinyl in g/f sleeve and you'd be a fool to miss out as they won't be around for very long.
Apparently these guys were massively influenced by a Sub-pop band called Earth, so that's my next one to check out.

It mentions the video here http://www.deltahaze.com/johnson/Legacy.html#photos

And says it turned out to not be him. No mention of the aMOunt payed.

Shows the two known photographs of him.

    [IMG] and [IMG]

The second pic is the one which is on my album cover.

    Hi Chris,

Try a better one that uses a stepped attenuators or transformers. I fancy trying one of those Bent Audio jobs like the one Michaelab has. TBH there are other factors to take into account with passives.

Music wise, I have been listening to

    Howard Tate - Rediscovered

    Candi Staton - Candi Staton

Solomon Burke - Don't give up on me

    Donnie - The Colored section

    Soul music at it's best.

    Hi Dean!

Long time no post!. Good to see you again.

THe creek has a stepped attenuator and short cable runs. Ive also tried the W.A.D. one, which has a stepped attenuator in it. I just dont like them at all. I have yet to try one with transformers.. so never say never...

Sounds like a list (above) of other soul artists I should get into. I shall pick your brains some more in due course ;) Soul wise, I have been enjoying Aretha's young, gifted and black album, and also lots of Bill Withers ( Northern Soul?).

    Cheers
    Chris

    NB
The emporium has a passive that sounds interesting. It uses twin transformers, and has a 6db boost button (?). Second hand of course, about 1,400. Just caught my eye, thats all.

Chris, I haven't checked their site but it sounds like a Stephens & Biullington job like the NOH and MF Audio transformer based passives, certainly the MF has the 6db boost. I'll have a look.:)

In the dim and distant past I used to have the Hughes/Thrall album on vinyl. Used to be quite into Pat Travers and IIRC Thrall was his guitarist. From memory the H/T album was excellent I've got a couple of tracks from it by Hughes live (Muscle and Blood - stonking version from Burning Japan Live and First Step of Love from his live in South America "bonus CD" with Return of Crysal Karma album). Having recvently "rediscovered" Hughes solo stuff (i kinda stopped listening after Play Me Out) I have been well impressed - as you say very soulfull but with great heavy edge. He's also got geat musicialns.

And get that Bandolier out of the loft sharpish !!!

    Hi Chris,

I agree, not everyone is going to like passive preamps and you need address various matching conditions. This is an area where cables can make a difference. There are different types of stepped attenuators that use different components. I have mad (tweaked) a few. The difference can be quite big. What you can get with them is a increase in resolution & detail, what you may lose is bandwidth & dynamics.

I'm think of getting the Bent audio kit as this is a lot cheaper than the Music First job.

    On to the music.

The albums listed are excellent examples of recently released soul albums. Here the singing is the key.

All except the Candi Staton album were recorded within the last couple of years or so. Donnie is a new kid on the block & shows where soul music is at today.

Bill Withers has done some fine stuff in his time but it isn't Northern Soul. Northern Soul is a real minefield but an enjoyable one. It's made up of rare & obscure records. It was uptempo 60s soul based a lot around the classic Motown sound of the mid 60s. It got it's name due to being popular in the North of England.

The scene still carrys on today. It has a big collectors element with records going for big money.

Have a look here for an example of some of the prices.

I will write more on this & other subjects.

Is that Candi Staton the new compilation? I must get that, she's one of my favourite singers.

I have a soft spot for classic Stax and Philly soul. The Staple Singers, Eddie Floyd, Margie Joseph, Jean Knight, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, MFSB, Teddy Pendergrass, The O'Jays, all fantastic stuff.

Now spinning: Margie Joseph, Phase II. One of the sexiest voices in soul music.

    Hi Ian,

Yes, it's the recent one that includes stuff she recorded at the FAME studios in the late 60s to mid 70s. Pre "Young hearts run free". She is one of my favourites as well. What a voice!

I got this on cd but you can get it on vinyl as well.
