just played a few CDs,whilst reading the Sun,and then popped on DSOTM on vinyl,as i do at least once a week, but noticed something I had never noticed before, the main driver was going ten to the penny, like it was on speed.I thought something was wrong so popped a bass heavy cd on,and nope nothing out of the ordinary, popped Time on again and the speakers again looked like they were about to blow up

must be some crazy low bass on that record, although ive heard it weekly for 25 years and still never noticed what is happening to the main driver

    spooky,or is it just me?

cone flap caused by a warped record? merlin did a recording of leftfields open up from his tt which has scary bass cone movement on it thanks to this.
    cheers

I've seen supposdly "flat" records do this - you should see what Henryt's old Verity Audios thought of my Whodini "Haunted house of rock" 12 inch - talk about cone excursion!!!!

Luckily, my system is so band limited (as he puts it) that you never see these kinds of things on my rig - or at least, I've never looked for them. I might have to try it out sometime though :)

Hmmm. There may still be warps or you might be in arm resonance territory (beyond my jurisdiction, I'm afraid). Is the arm too tight or loose? Isn't there a big nut thing?

Alternatively, it's possible with a P3 it might be worth looking at the support that the TT is on and the path to the floor. What's the stand, floor material, etc.?

I'm just treading water here really. Is there a TT doctor in the house?

Put the P3 feet back on. I assume 'decent stand' means 'suitable stand'.

My Regas, LP12 and Gyro all did this - it's just subsonics going through the stylus/arm/TT etc etc. There's a lot of low-frequency energy on an lp, some of it caused by even the smallest warps - I've found some records do it more than others.

its an Ash deigns,so good enough not to bother a Planar I think,so yes, more 'suitable' than decent i suppose. The feet don't make a difference.Gromit, interesting,Ive just never noticed after playing vinyl for years

Yup - what is also even stranger is with my kit it's worse on some days than others; but I also live fairly close to a very busy main road so I'm reckoning there's quite a lot of subsonic vibration coming from that.

Been there done that bought the T-shirt. The RDC made things sound "nicer" buuuut evvvvrrrrryyyyyyttttthiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg sounded sllllllooooooowwwwwwwwwerrrrrrrrr... The Rega feet are all different sizes too, to help break up resonances in the plinth, whilst the RDC cones are all the same size.

I'm wandering if the RDC cones are dumping energy BACK into the plinth???

    Oh - and don't use a clamp on a P3 either - it kills the speed :)

Wouldn't worry Saab - at least you get proper bass with a TT.

Julian, that Leftfield 12" is flat as a pancake - takes the piss out of the CD though don't you think :D
