DAT time versus computer time?

Discussion in 'Pro Audio' started by Walter Harley, Aug 1, 2004.

  1. When I transfer a DAT into my computer, the time shown on the front panel is
different than that shown on the record dialog of the computer. They're off
by about a minute per hour; the computer runs faster than the DAT. (I don't
know which one is closer to my wristwatch.)

The DAT player is a Fostex D-5. Coming out the AES/EBU digital out, into a
TC Finalizer set to "bypass", into the SPDIF input on an M-Audio Audiophile
2496, recording with SoundForge. (The Finalizer is just there to convert
AES/EBU to SPDIF.) The Audiophile settings are set to the same sample rate
as what's on the DAT. The DAT player shows zero errors.

Anybody know why this happens? Even if they're both on separate clocks, it
seems surprising to have a discrepancy as large as 1.7%.
