I am kicking myself about this.

He had a packard bell which was not picking up SSIDs or wireless traffic, so I assumed the anthena had broken.

I have since discovered the anthena can be turned off using hot keys, I supplied a USB wifi card in order to solve the problem.

I am worried that he will find out and think I am a complete pleb, what do I do?

I am beating myself about this because it was such a silly mistake to make.

Ask him not to put a recommendation on your web site.

I know it was just such a schoolboy error that I will look stupid. At the time I hadn't seen many modern laptops so I was totaly unaware of the switch.

I know for next time though and its all part of the learning curve. I know lot about operating systems and desktops, but I don't know much about individual laptops, I am not rich enough:D

No but if my uncle sees this external wireless adaptor (which probably has a better range than the internal one) he will say somthing and he will probably tell him how to fix the internal one making me look like a dork.

I solved the problem, I just didn't want somebody else telling him making me look like a prick. He said the adaptor I gave him has much better reception than the built in one anyway so is perfectly happy.

    Amazing trade...........

I recently fell victim to another one of these new fangled laptop kompewtas, same type of thing execpt the bluetooth was failing, fortunately I stumbled upon the switches by accident for the blue tooth and wi-fi

Another booby trap I've discovered on the wi-fi voodoo is that some manufacturers have power save and applied to the card (card power and transmission power), I always step these up to full.

Yep, some drivers are pain in the kneck though, they don't allow you to adjust these settings, I find the drivers you get with cheap PCMCIA cards are often the best, they allow to adjust everything.

The linksys/belkin/netgear stuff always protects the end user from the real settings especialy with regard to routers. I find D-LINK are pretty good in this regard as they do allow you customise everything.

You can also replace the firmware on some Linksys routers too with card core third party stuff which gives you almost Cisco level customisation.
