As title says, some quality components for making your own power cables.

    Wattgate IEC320i's - £14

Lapp Olflex Classic 110 CY cable, 3 x 2.5mm cable with tinned copper braid (RFI / EMI shield) and covered with clear outer insulation - £2.80 per metre.

Clipsal industrial plugs, these are the same as the Russ Andrews reference plugs they use on the reference and Kimber power cables - £11.

All prices exclude delivery but the P&P will be at cost and can be sent by whatever method you choose.

Please post any questions you may have or PM / email if you are interested and thanks for looking.

EDIT : Photos of the bits available on request.

Good stuff there ..should make a rather nice power cable.

Are you connecting the shield at wall end only ?

I've always found this the best.

If its anything like the cable I'm using a bit of heat shrink at both ends gives a nice tidy finish.

If you can put a mirror finish on the three pin plugs making certain the edges are sharp also seems to give improved performance.

Hi Zanash! On the cables I have made up for myself I have connected the shield at the plug (wall) end and cleaned the contacts up using Deoxit D5 - maybe not a mirror finish but seems to do the trick.

I think you're right on the quality of the Lapp cable, I have some DIY cables using Belden 83803, some using the Lapp and also have one Kimber PK14 (not made by me).

On a purely performance basis I think the Belden is the best of the bunch, the Lapp comes a close second, with the Kimber bringing up the rear. On a price / performance rating the Lapp has to be best and looks great too.

I think the above says volumes about cost not always equalling performance - the Belden is ~£5 per foot, the Lapp ~£3 per metre and the Kimber £65 per metre!

I really like the Belden but would be happier if I could get it cheaper. I think my next experiment will be using the Belden 83802 to make up a cable using the VHAudio design, a little more complicated than my attempts so far but I think I need to try it.

I know what you mean on the Belden price, I got some from Parts Express to try it out and I do like it. I may well get some more if you want some shout out and I'll up the order a bit if I do - I think it will work out £4.80 - £4.90 per foot. Which I don't think is too bad as the cheapest I have seen it here is £7 per foot

I'll give the cillit bang a try and see how I get on.

That does sound good, any idea what shipping costs are?

@zanash, no problem on the Belden mate, it's not definite that I will order more as the Lapp is so good, but if the shipping from zebracables is reasonable......

No, but I would imagine it would be competitive with Parts Express.
You may have to pay VAT when it comes into the country, and you'll find the carrier also add their bit on top, for paying customs & excise on your behalf. :(

    Regards, Graham.

Cheers mate. I think maybe by the time the carriage, import duty and VAT are added it might be more expensive than the £4.80'ish I can get it for - but I'll bear it in mind if I ever do order more. Much appreciated!

    Andye,

How many of the wattgates and clipsals do you have available please? I hope to make up 4 cords.

I just picked up a length of 83803 in the States (have relatives there) for $4 a foot and should have it home by month end.

I spent an hour last night browsing ebay for plugs and connectors without coming to any conclusion....

$4 per foot is a fantastic price, make sure they send it asa gift and you won't have to pay vat or duty on it.

You can have 4 of each if you like mate.

For anyone else, I "should" have about 20 Wattgates left and 10 plugs after that, but I will most likely be ordering more.

Have had a few people ask about photos, I can email them to any one who wants them. I would post them up but they are too big.
