A friend of mine wants to get a new amp as her Audiolab 8000 broke down. Going to Sevenoaks on Friday to have a listen to things but I don't really know what's what in this price range anymore. Is there anything everyone is raving about or are they all about equal? Something with good bass control is important and a lively sound.

I really enjoyed my Cyrus 3 so I suppose the 5 or 6 may be an option. Rotel?

How about a mint condish used Cyrus 7 for <£400. Having enjoyed an 8000A in years gone personally speaking its a considerable step up.

Second hand Rotel RA-1062 should be doable for around that price :)

Unfortunately she is not keen on second hand, I might be able to convince her to go for ex-demo if you know of any bargains around?

Second the recommendation of the Rotel RA-1062. Also, listen to an RA-01.

I was going to suggest an Exposure 2010 but I see they're £600 new. Might be possible to get an ex-dem model nearer your friend's guide price.

    Hi Tenson,

Just changed my audiolab 8000A for a 2nd hand Primare A20 Mk2, cost me £390 incl carriage, dunno what they go for ex dem though.. Initial impressions are that the Primare is a belter - and thats taking into consideration that all my kit was stone cold when i set it up last night having moved house over the weekend, and i only got the amp yesterday. Cant wait to get things warmed up and optimise speaker position!

Appreciate your friend does not want to go 2nd hand but, if your they loved the audiolab that much i know a man with one coming up for sale - its a 'D' serial number model. Fully functional, mint condition, tax and tested, no tyre kickers please etc etc in a shameless plug type way...........

These are excellent, having heared Lord sumits against my (at the time) nu-Vista (£3.5k worth) at a recent bake-off it was prefered by many! With a £400 budget IMHO there is nothing else near.

No they have a shit selection! But it is the only place near here to go and listen ot things other than London.

Personally I dislike the Audiolab but her ex bought it and has been nagging her about it recently.. funny it should brake now, hes welcome to it! :p

I like the idea of the Edenlake, her taste in music is mainly jazz, chill out (stuff like Faithless) and a few bits of whatever else. I'll see what I can do to convince her. I don't suppose there is anywhere within driving distance of Kent where we could listen to one?

What about a Tag Mclaren 60i or 60irv?

If she liked the Audiolab, she'll love one of those. Come up frequently on eBay around £400 and very good they are too.

Failing that, Moorgate is giving away their last MF X-80 for £220! mahoosive bargain IMO.

She probably likes the audilad coz she knows nothing else? I had an audilab and the eden lake amp is sooooooo much better, valves and jaz are a natural partnership.

If you can, get a Marantz KI PM-something-or-other.

I used to like my PM6010KI.
Best new amp I've ever heard under £500.

I had, well technicallly still have a 6010KI and I got a 7200KI for my brother. The 7200KI is superior to the 6010KI but neither can come remotely close to my valve amp which even now has cost less than £500 or the Ming Da from Edenlake.

With what she listens to, the Edenlake is a bit of a no brainer. My Missus even likes the way it looks

Buying a valve amp is a no-brainer full stop. Its the first amp Ive had were female visitors have actually commented how good the music sounds, and as we all know thats saying something.

I'm sure the Ming Da sounds "better" Rsand, but I certainly wouldn't recommend a valve amp to a non-hobbyist. I also own a valve amp and find it much more "delicate" and time-consuming than my SS amps.

If she's after something that'll just get on and play the music, the Tag 60irv is a fine piece of equipment. IMO, it sounds as sweet and musical as many valve amps of equivalent price.

People who automatically assume anything valve beats anything solid-state are fools and need spanking.

Also, please don't imply that people who own Audiolab/Tag gear are idiots who don't know any better  .
