Some on here are amazed that we continue to think of the Earth in only three dimensional terms ;)

    lie, lie, lie.......
the full moon is rising over dark water
and the fools below are picking up sticks
and the man in the gallows lies permanently
waiting for the doctors to come back and tend to him,

the flat earth society is meeting here today,
    singing happy little lies
and the bright ship humana is sent far away
    with grave determination....
and no destination, lie, lie, lie

yeah, nothing feels better than a spray of clean water
and the whistling wind on a calm summer night,
but you'd better believe that down in their quarters
the men are holding in for their dear lives,
the flat earth society is somewhere far away,
    with their candlesticks and compasses
and the bright ship humana is well on its way
    with grave determination.....
and no destination, lie, lie, lie, ad infinitum

    ;)

Hmm...8 replies in and only penance has remotely attempted to answer the question :D

rob - first of all a disclaimer: the flat earth vs. round earth debate (in hifi) has in the past been nearly as acrimonious as the subjectivist vs. objectivist debates so it's something of a contentious topic to raise.

Take a look at TonyL's description of the term and it's history on the Pink Fish Media site.

In essence, flat earth is about pace rhythm and timing (PRaT), the boogie factor, carrying a tune etc with perhaps less importance given to soundstaging and other such nebulous hifi terms as "air" and "space". Flat earthers tend to promote the "source first" approach, ie, get the best front end you can and the rest will follow. The term flat earth comes because when Linn and Naim first promoted these ideas they were completely at odds with current hifi thinking hence their followers were said to be like those who still believe the earth is flat.

Round earth is essentially the other end of the scale.

In reality most people's tastes and most equipment is somewhere in between and it is possible to have a system that excels in both the flat earth and round earth areas.

    Hope that helps.

    Michael.

As Michael says, there are those who listen for the tune. These people are flat earth.

There are those who listen for timbre and soundstage. These people are round earth.

Then there are those who don't listen at all but measure. These people are notofthis earth.

And then there are people like me who listen for the tune and for tibre and soundstage and regard them all as important ;)
