I've been looking for a while to upgrade the arm but the price of Ekos/Aro put me off - I had auditioned the Gyro but the Orbe was too much of a bargain (bought from a fellow Zerogain user).

    LP12 Provisionally SOLD.

I never really liked the ekos anyway - not much of an upgrade on the ittock - I am sure the new combo will beat the linn/ekos/lingo by quite a wide margin. cartridge?

the orbe will blow away any linn. and your right an ekos will sound no diiferent to an ittok on the lp12. the arm is way to good for the deck. the first thing you will notice when changing from an lp12 to the orbe is surface noise and timing, the lp12 was a good deck in 1974 but times have moved on. can't you stretch to an sme 1v or v though that will realy make the orbe sing, and hold onto the denon dl304 it is a great cartridge for that deck, i have one aswell as a van den hul. what cartridge were you thinking of, may i recomend a van den hul mc1 special

    Currently using a Lyra Dorian.

The Denon is a great cart especially for the price but the Dorian is a serious step up.

Apparently the orbe sounds even better with a brinkmann 10.5 than the sme V - as reported last year in one of the hifi mags. The dem item was supplied by Walrus - I discussed it with them. I have owned both arms and prefer the 10.5. It is more precise and natural sounding than the SME V with better dynamics and bass. But it is 50% more in terms of cost.

Agree about the linn. Its now really a vintage deck and seriously off the pace wrt modern decks like michell, origin live and many others.

What else did you compare the lyra with?

I have heard the grasshopper and the colibri - neither really floated my boat. A bit dry and lean sounding. However I have heard the new condor is really something special from a guy who has one, but I havent heard it myself.

I have heard a couple of the lyras - dorian, helikon and the argo I beleive. They are pretty good but I found it a little warm for my taste, but I do like a slightly bright cartridge perhaps. I have heard the new titan is much more neutral and perhaps a contender for worlds best - I look forward to hearing it!

Fell for the Lyra straight away. Well made, easy to install and so far has been a revelation on all types of music I listen to - also was within the price range I had put in place which I had to stick to.

I'm currently very happy with the deck and only selling the LP12 cos I'm sure someone will find a good home for it - it is wasted where it currently is on my computer desk.

deck goes into a Trichord Dino+ with upgraded power chord between amp and PSU.

Then into a tri-amped active Linn Keilidhs (majik/lk100/lk140).
    Denon DVD2900 sacd/dvd
    Magnum Dynalab FT101a tuner.

Still a bit of a Linnie and always enjoy active over passive speakers. A modest system but it rocks when it needs to and plays classical as well - my flat earth starting to go round corners..

Good phono stage - the new diablo is a killer though. Great tuner and cdp as well!

Yes active is good. Triamped is almost as good. I can make a few suggestions if you are prepared to countenance switching away from linn completely ;-).

i can't remember which one a lydian or something it was a while ago. back to lp 12 i have had 4 of them over the years and was never happy. had a top spec one and it was not as good as an old planner 3 i have. it had lingo ,ekos, arkiv, trampolin cirkus etc, only had it for a week then got the gyr dec and have never looked back. my sme arm has silver wirring by the way, transforms the arm into super league status

My sme 5 was taken off smes own model 20 demonstrator when the new owner wanted to fit a graham tonearm instead. It was the gold bearing standard and silver wired. A clear stepup from the standard sme v. The brinkmann 10.5 is still way ahead though.

I always thought all the linn amps I heard souned a bit flat. Even the current 5k-ish ones.

My friend just swapped his linn for a simon yorke. He used to sell linn.

mmmm Simon yorke. Seen one never listened to one - sadly, seem a bit like hens teeth out there.

I always enjoyed the Linn sound, my system images well enough bearing in mind the size of the room soundstages aren't really going to happen and I'm not too fussed about them.

I'm happy with my amps and the only ones I've heard personally which I may consider swapping them for would be the Lavardin amps which I thought were superb and also the Spectral amps which just rocked like a good 'un.

Both out of my price range at the moment.
