What are the best sounding fuses ?

both with regards to the 5mm x 20mm anti surge or fast acting, and the standard 3pin plug types. I remember someone saying the Bussman fuses are silver plated ?

From a mains filter (like my dezorel G2) do you think it would be safe not to use external fuses? Its plug has a fuse for starters and it has its own thermal fuses on the outputs.

The fuse is clearly the weakest link that must have a huge negative impact regardless of how good a mains cable is used although clearly the benefits from a sheilded mains cable like the excellent ones I got from you are still worthwhile.

Not bad thanks Pete. You get your new amps?

I read a review in HFC about some 'audiphile' fuses think they were about £70 they were written off as BS! Mags usually say positive things like not much difference or if you have done everything else first but these were totally shot down in flames.

well a little time has passed and the ordered fuse have arrived ....set down a few cd and played through with a throughly warmed up system ......So which fuse to swap ?

settled on the cdp for starters ....swapped out the small glass tube and fitted another one that looked identical and of the same rating.

played the first cd again ...by half way through the first track it was apparent that the treble was markedly clearer and the bass had lost a little boom but was no less deep.

played a few more discs ....all with the same results ..bugger

swapped the fuse over again ....bugger bugger bugger

swapped back to xindak after half a track ....

and I thought I knew most of the easy things to tweak ...bugger bugger...

IMHO, you will get the same results by cleaning all your fuses, fuse holders, plug pins and other connectors!

The fuse and holders are cleaned approx every other month ...I'm we aware of the benifits of shiney plugs and fuses! No this is without doubt something more ....

and all for the few pence its cost .. I've heard good ic's do less !

Don't forget your fuse will need at least 48 hours to properly burn in.

    After that, wow!!

I believe a certain site are doing a deal on 13 amp fuses, yours for £15.00 + VAT each. They are basicaly the same as any other fuse but they sold by a certain scots man so he feels he can charge you 15000% too much for it.

Buy the wilco one and some duraglit and just clean them !

The silver xindak ones do sound significantly better than the chrome[nickel?]plated jobies that came as standard in my cdp.

    This is interesting.
Not done anything with the fuses yet...

Recently I made up some new DIY mains cables and a 4 way block. Using 4 x 1mm dia (pure copper) cores, twisted together and double insulated for each pole, and then screened in copper foil. Screen earthed at plug end
I then tried suitable Ferrite cores on each end.

The result - I like them a lot.
I have always had the fuses soldered into the plugs (high silver content solder of course.
I might do away with the 4 way block in favour for something more direct.

    Hmmm. Back to the fuses...
Oh and what plug materials are there out there that may improve things?

Not been a great fan of ferrites ....in my system they seem to squash the dynamics, but if your happy with the sound thats great.

You could try cleaning all the fuses and holders with a cleaner like duraglit.... i've found this quite effective
