As some of you may know I am in the process of setting up my own multimedia/web development/CMS company but I don't have much money apart from overdraft. I could do with a part time job when for when the business starts trading or just before,.

I was thinking of getting a part time job at HMV does anybody know how easy these jobs are to get?

try for a part time job at the carphone warehouse or phones 4U.

CPW especially are always short of staff in the holiday period, and you get commission on top of your salary... this is especially good at times like x-mas when the sales are high.

When I was a student I used to do one day a week at CPW (saturday, the busiest day), and that paid me about £400 a month.

I'd find out which store is the busiest if I were you, and then try to speak to the branch manager directly and see if they want any help over x-mas.

Certainly, I'd bet my boots you'd earn more than at HMV.

    Cheers
    Chris

Its not about the money as such, the money in important but £100 a week will be enough, its more than I get on the dole. My problem is I am very honest I can push somthing if really believe in it but for a phone shop I don't think I would be pushy enough.

I can't be doing with a sales job where you need to meet targets which is why HMV appeals, I also love music and I know quite a lot about certain areas.

Its just a pitty the web development company I worked for as a student as no work :(

I am doing a part time course at the moment but that ends on friday so I will at a loose end again, some people on another forum are giving a lot of greif saying I have sat around doing nothing for 4 months, but traveling 50 miles away for a university course 5 days a week is hardly nothing, plus loosing my grandad and my uncle has really set me back.

Somthing none physical would better, shop work I can do, but I have co-ordination problems, this why I find driving so difficult and I can't do bar work as I would be spilling drink down the customers.

There is no reason why I can't work in a shop though, I tried Maplin when I was at university but I didn't get it, so I applied for a web development job (part time) the pay was more than twice as much and I got it.

I just need some tempory work so I am not having to use all my overdraft to setup my business, which is why christmas work would be ideal somthing like 20 hours a week with a bit of sundays :).

get down yer local theatre and see've they need any cassies, depending on the theatre you chose will dictate the type of work you'll get,but expect to unload an artic or 2,plus side is you tend to get to see alot of shows free, the downsides to some are the weird hours and it can be quite physical

You live in manchester, I know of one HMV in the city centre go in and ask. Bottleneck has the best idea 4 day's per month for £400 this will give you more time to set up your own business.

Well I know a bit about phones, I know all the technology behind them and it will only take me 10 minutes to learn what features each phones got, I can only already tell you the exact specs of each Sony phone :D

However I am worried I won't be able to meet the targets, I am not just sure how pushy I am. When I was a teenager I was very good at selling PCs but that was like 8 years ago.

I have just looked into HMV and they want retail experience even for their seasonal posts.

Saturday workers arent expected to be pushy at cpw AT. They are supposed to be there, and hopefully sell a few accessories and pay as you go cards, and the odd phone here and there.

The managers are especially happy if you turn up not wearing a mickey mouse tie and on time.

the shop managers are grateful for the extra staff to man the tills, its not about ramming goods down peoples necks at x-mas, its about serving the queues of people.

part time/weekend workers are spared the brunt of the sales motivation and training, its just to help a drowning sales force get through the busiest time of the year.

phones 4u are a poor second choice to cpw though, there is a nasty pushy mentality there.

can't vouch for HMV, but when I worked in Our Price, I have to say that it was utterly soul destroying. the managers seemed to be picked soley for their ability to brown-nose the upper echelons of head office management. I came close to decking my assistant manager when he told me at a review " I wish you were leaving after christmas instead of the temps".
A great pity that he was beaten and robbed six months prior to the comment he made above as I missed out on a first class schadenfreuder moment. Had I realised he was such a complete tosser he would never have got any sympathy from me.

I too would NOT recommend working at HMV. Terrible employer, dont care about their temporary staff at all, because they can always get someone to replace you.

I would regularly be made to work from 8 - 3pm+ without a break, when i asked for one i was told to lump it or leave. I lumped it for a while and then told em to stick it. Manager was an arsehole as well. Staff (including guy in charge of the stores) used to actually kick deliveries around all over the place. I dont buy anything from HMV any more. :)

I know the PO are desperate for staff over the festive period, maybe you could get a round. Get fresh air, keep you fit and get to abit of an 'extra' bonus of Mrs Jones at No.16..........

haha Chorley is miles away though especialy knowing the unreliability of the TransPennine train service.

The post office sounds ideal I might give it ago.

PS I think I will probably give HMV a wide birth after reading these comments.

probably wise. the Our Price experience taught me that the cool idea of working in a record shop was nothing like the reality of a corporate whore like Virgin Our Price. product knowledge counted for shit. all that was required was to shift shitloads of the latest NOW374! compilation. it didn't matter if you knew lots about specialist genres like jazz, world etc. the manager would treat you like crap because you knew a lot about music. and you had to listen to total crap music on a totally crap system. I remember the day we were forced to play the "ETERNAL" album all saturday because the company had a huge overstock and it wasn't selling. not good....

take an ipod out on a postal round if you want to listen to cool music while you work!
