How old is your current mobile phone? How often do you replace it? Model details if you feel like showing off.

I have a Siemems A60, it has GPRS (comes in handy for me to test my own sites), stores at least 100 text messages, has a colour screen, cost £25 including £20 worth of talk time and its pay as you go. Its about two months old, my dad got this has he needed a new phone, but he said he wouldn't need one that fancy he has my old phone.

I don't replace my phones on purpose I just wait to they break I had a 3310 than broke when some maniac first bus driver drenched me on Salford crescent, it was so bad that my pockets had puddles in them. The phone never worked after that.

PS I think there may be a little bug in the forum, as some how I managed to reply to your you post before you even made it :D

Still using my Nokia 3310 which having bought it straight after release is now nearing 6 years! In that time I've replaced the battery once as it seemed to be struggling to stay turned on in the cold and replaced the screen twice where I've dropped it.

I said less than 3 months but that is slightly distorted becuase I would keep a phone for 36 months if it still worked, I don't care what my phone is as longs as it works.

Can't remember when I got my SonyEricsson P800 but is was one of the first so that's probably about 12-18 months ago. Have been tempted to upgrade when the P900 and then P910i came out but have resisted because the P800 still does everything I need/want it to do as a smartphone and because I simply couldn't justify the expense. The P800 is also incredibly robust, having been dropped onto hard surfaces (pavement) a couple of times with no obvious damage  .

SE are apparently going to release a new model in the series this summer which will be a P910i with a megapixel camera (but no 3G). At that point an upgrade might just be too tempting for me to resist, esp. if the camera quality is anything like the S700i which is stunning, full stop, no need to add the "for a phone" qualifier. If it saves me from having to buy a "pocket" digital camera to always have around (the SLR is way too bulky for that) then it's worth going for.

btw, this is easily the longest time I've stuck with one phone :)

Michael.

PS: does anyone give a sh1t about 3G? If so, why? :confiused: Biggest load of bollox to hit the phone market yet IMO.

No I don't give a shit about it, GRPS is hany I will openly admit being able to check my emails on my phone is a nice thing to have especialy on such a cheap phone, the way most people make sites though they won't work on most GRPS phones.

3G is just a gimmick, why would I want to watch movies on a 1.5" screen? If I want mobile music I would buy an MP3 player, if I want to listen to the radio I have a tuner. 3G is a bit of a flop and there isn't enough air space for it without serious environmental consequences, all that required bandwidth needs lot of transmitters and they are very much NIMBY.

What the mobile phone makers are now discovering despite their massive attempt to sell us the technology is that most people want a phone to phone and text and that's all! All this 3G stuff is bollocks. And they are going to turn off FM radio in the hope that the mobile phone market will buy the freed up airspace at the ludicrous prices they paid in the last auction! No chance I say. Whoever brings that phone over from Japan that has big, single use buttons and does only what it says on the tin will clean up I reckon.

Well, I'll put in my two pence, having started the topic.

I got my Nokia 8850 in november 2001, and it's been fine but I've replaced the back once. The new one now has dents in it (it's aluminium) from being dropped on tarmac, and the phone is starting to get a bit dodgy and needs a new battery. However, I am now thinking about changing it because it's dying, and also wondering if I really need contract anymore (or if I ever did), since I've just worked out that once I cover my monthly outgoings, I'm broke (and no, I've not bought anything on the never-never, other than my house).

I agree with AT - GPRS is nice because I do like being able to check my e-mails on the phone (esp. when I'm in London where my office firewall doesn't allow access to webmail services) and sometimes it can be useful to surf the occasional internet page, but video calling, movies on the phone etc??? Why? Especially when you have to pay an arm and a leg for it all!

Isaac, your battery has lasted a long time  - the one on my P800 is already on its way out after just 18 months; I'm having to charge it almost every day now whereas it used to last 3-4 days on a charge.

Michael.

michael - I have always let it discharge a lot before charging it. Yes. Li-Ion aren't supposed to suffer memory effects, but my experience has been that if you regularly let it discharge fully, it doesn't lose capacity as quickly. The phone will still last 3 days in a strong signal area.

Current phone a SonyE P910i, company phone from Volvo, GPRS included along with mobile Outlook access.

Before that I kept the same SonyE T28i for about 3 years as I have no interest in mobiles at all really.

mine is an old Siemens m35i - bright yellow...mainly becuase when I go mountain biking (the phone's normally in my back pocket...) I can find it when it lands in a field!
as on my last one, the screen ended up looking like a bar code...

it's just pay as you go - I make most of my phone calls from work...as you do, but being single again - I'm texting a lot more now!

an ex colleague had a 3g mobile - he took it back, he said something like - if he could get a 3g signal -even if the signal was barely there and was unable to talk to someone he couldn't revert to a normal signal, so he ended up having half a conversation... and if he was talking and he lost the 3g signal, his phone would cut off!! there was no manual override...

About 5 hours old - Picked it up this morning because i needed a spare. It's one of the Nokia clamshells. It looks good specs wise but I doubt it'll last a month before I break it :D

I lost my Nokia 6310i and couldn't get one at a reasonable price

Fantastic phones. Rock hard and totally reliable. Thats why I got another phone this morning. If I lose, Break etc the 6310i I'll be in tears. Couldn't care less about the new one.

I've got a 6310i it's a company phone, hard wired hands free kit in car etc, works okay, although batteries can become loose, i used to have a 6100 these were great, I prefer a smaller phone, however I refuse to get a bloody camera phone, what a complete waste of time, company are looking to upgrade phones at the moment, and fit hard wired bluetooth car kits, this is a retrograde step in my opinion, as connection not as reliable (some in company already have them fitted) and they don't charge your phone, TBH I want a phone that works as only a phone, (although I do like the built in alram clock) but why do you need more functionality than this, or is it just commercial one-up-man-ship?

PS Markus, our phones are due for an upgrade, and they don't allways ask for old phone back, if this is the case you are welcome to mine for the cost of the postage.

must admit i'm a bit of a phone tart. i usually upgrade once a year i've gone from (8850 -> r380 -> t68 -> p800). i would have kept the p800 but unfortunately mine wasn;t as robust as michaels and it decided to stop working properly - i may end up using it as a bluetooth remote for my hi-fi if i ever get round to it). i've currently got a nokia 5140 a great little phone with lots of toys (db meter, flashlight, compass along with gprs and all that guff which i hardly ever use to be honest). i've just added a gps shell to it so i can globally position myself which is fun and quite useful if you forget where you leave the car. i'm currently thinking of going retro and getting another of the nokia slide phones (8850, 8890 or 8910) but the only one that will work with orange is the latter and that's a bit on the pricey side still for a 2nd phone. also like the sound of the samsung p510 with it's motorised flip but can see it breaking and getting old really quick.
cheers
