As the title says really. Short answer is buy a new TV - but this one works so I don't see any need to send it to the landfil just yet.
A quick look at Maplin shows there might be some options in terms of converters but is there a particular output that will convert better? (given I don't have a DVD player yet is there something to look for)

And at what price to players cease to be disposable?

u'd need a modulator (i believe that's the term - rf modulator?) and the best output from the dvd for that would probably be rgb via scart.

Thanks Robert that looks like the sort of thing - odd to think that I could buy a player cheaper than the box to connect it with...

Was it you that was looking at DVD with hard drive players recently?

Wire it into the SCART socket on your VCR (remember them??); set VCR to "aux" and turn telly to video channel. Works for my mate.

    errr...because I didn't know that they exist!

VCR? yep still using one - at present the sat box goes into the VCR SCART - so maybe a two into one SCART - though am hoping to loose a box somewhere along the line - sounds like I should look at DVD recorders.

    Hmmm...

Toshiba DR1 arrived home on Saturday -

yes it has an RF out :)

no it doesn't do playback through it :(

it will record via RF in and allow viewing of live TV via RF out but nothing else.

Tried various set-ups of linking it through the VCR and/or sat box but no joy (domfjbrown - didn't find 'aux' setting on VCR?)

So, not quite square one and dvd does have other outputs (composite, s-video) but not there yet.

    julian - any recommended dvd-rams?

If your VCR has a SCART socket, there has to be a way of selecting it as an input (so you can tape from another VCR, camcorder, satbox etc). Select that, and make sure the DVD's wired into that, and that the telly's only wired to the video via RF...

Sounds like a new telly would have been cheaper than the Toshiba DVD recorder though!

Did it work? Sweeeeeeet!! (Actually, you can think my mate PD from Reading - it's how he used to use his DVD player, before I sold my old Sony 4:3 telly to him - he he!)

Are you gonna keep the DVD-R??

    Yes it looks that way.

It was an 'open box' job from Richer which was picked up in London for me so return options are 'limited'.

With hindsight I could have got any plain DVD player and done the same, but loosing the VCR (we only use it for timeshifting anyway) in favour of a one-box recorder/DVD player appealed. Of course, for now, the VCR is staying as well*. A separate rf modulator would be a neater solution, but one day we really will buy another telly! That said I have never actually bought a telly, the present one came included with the last flat.

*Having googled a bit it seems that this is becomming fairly common practice for people connecting freeview boxes with no rf out to TVs with no scart - mainly as the more elderly members of the community start to switch over - that is the ones who are not being ripped-off and told they need a new TV if they want freeview!
