I've got a bit of an issue at the moment in my study where I get all sorts of nasties out of my speakers because theres just so much kit in here. Simply holding the cable up and over everything gives a noticeable decrease in noise, but its not as easy to type when youre holding a cable above your head

I'm looking for a decent IC cable to make a couple of balanced jack->XLR ICs with oodles of screening/shielding, any suggestions? Was going to go with Neutrik connectors (cheap and decent, yeah? NC3MXX-B & NP3X-B). Something reasonably cheap (like say up to a few quid/metre), ultimate fidelity isnt quite as high on the list as getting rid of the buzzing.
This came up a few times in my searching, the price is certainly right.

Sound card is an E-Mu 1212M and speakers Tannoy Reveal Active

Musiflex is pretty good, it has a solid shielding around it... well kind of, its flexible, kind of like a conductive rubber that completely surrounds the cable with a small copper wire running aside it which you can solder to.

...although having looked at the site, the Quadflex you linked too sounds like it is supposed to be even better shielded!

This is what I'm thinking (though the musiflex does come in purple!)

higher gauge conductors in the quadflex though (or is it lower gauge ... thinner anyway), Should I care? (edit: actually, never mind, theres 2 of them for each signal, don't mind me)

Was just chatting to a friend of mine from the pro audio side of the tracks, apparenty he uses quadflex to good effect - good enough for me!

Gotham GAC-3 has excellent, measured noise immunity at 115dB @25kHz.

Does your mobile phone make a "dit-dah-dit-dah-dit" noise if you hold it near your hifi? That's transmitting at 900MHz, so you tell me...

fraid you have answered your own question .......!

no amount of shielding will provide the silence you crave .....think more of adding distance from the sources of interference

unfortunately at the moment its just not possible. The sources of interference are literally everywhere.
The study is currently a small room, around 8x8', with around 20 or so different bits of hardware/electronic gadgetry, so this is the best option open to me at the moment.

I've just done a major tidy of all the cables everywhere, bundling them all up (except of course the ICs) and that helped to some extent, but theres still enough noise to be quite noticeable.

must remember to move house at some point :/

one of those 20 or so bits of electronic gadgetry is an air-conditioner ;)

Well, when I moved the ICs around the noise level got worse/better depending on where they were, and bundling all of the other cables together helped to some extent as well.

The new cable and connectors arrived this morning, and after much swearing and finger burning while soldering (could really do with an extra couple hands) popped them in and they seem to do the trick. :)

That'll teach me for getting el-cheapo ICs from ebay!
