Has tight, fast bass, a forward midrange, does not emphasise brightness, and has a smooth (not grainy) sound for around £60 or less (second hand)?

No. Since I find a £90 (but cost me £50) Sonic Link Violet inferior to a £40 (cost me £5) VDH C5, then I might as well flog it on, and get something worthwhile, dont you think?

I like Sonic Link Violet. When all our own cables and our super expensive reference cables go walkies, the Violet goes back in.

It's a bit of a wrench though and tends to make be a bit short-tempered and crotchety....... ;) (...isn't that right WM? :D:D).

    Cheers

You could tie him up with FFRC.

So long as I don't have to listen to the stuff.... ;)

Where did the FFRC come for you at the bake-off Isaac?

Out of the budget cables, it was in the top three, with the ortofon and the Gale. It was better IMO than the pheonix, the cable talk and WM's homebrew (although of these three, this was the best). As for strict ranking, that's system dependant, and on the short listening used, I wouldn't like to draw more of a conclusion.

Suffice to say that I thought it was competitive.

Might have to borrow the ortofon off you for more extended testing in my own system. ;)

You are more than welcome, it's not doing anything much here to be fair (except taking up drawer space!).

PM me your addy and I'll send it over. If you're not far away you can drop in and say hello if you like.

    Cheers

    There might be if....

Strong £, weak $, you could always take advantage of that and have a goosey at www.audiogon.com. Its a US audio only auction site, a lot like ebay but better run. They have sections for just about everything. I bought my cables that way and including shipping/tax etc, paid less than 1/2 the UK price.

Well, I've been offered 2 different cables, one a Nuvista with Eichmans on it for a tempting price, which sounds good, and another silver cable, which is quite a bit more expensive. I am tempted. Just need to flog the crap off now....

For just a little over £60,(around 80 i guess) you can try the classic and favorite by many, Van Den Hul D102 MkIII. IMHO it's one excellent cable at an excellent price.

Paul, I recently tried the NuVista against my current Qunex2 and CableTalk Monitor3 with bullets plugs. For your system and musical tastes I'd try the CableTalk (I think they're about th £60 mark). I don't think you'll like the NuVista - I found that I had far too much deep bass that had little control - also alot of everything - very transparent but in your system it may be too bright. For now I'm sticking with the Qunex2 as it suites my tastes but hope to try some Silver Spirals soon

Cable Talk Monitor 3 is surprisingly good. I run mine in the spare system. For 50 quid you can't argue, it's less cloudy than things like QED Qnect 2, and is more organic and "nice" than Sonic Link Violet. IMO it's also slightly better than Nu-Vista.

I haven't bothered with bullet plugs on either of theses ones.

    Cheers

    Have a chat with Zanash.

His home made cable easily outperformed by old Cobra 2, which retails at about £75. I'm sure it added most of the things you mention to my own system.

That's interesting timpy - just goes to show how system dependant these things are - in my system I found the Qunex2 to be far more transparent than the cable talk but the CableTalk was better at getting the rhythms from the music.
