I know this SACD has been out for quite a while now but if you don't already own a copy, get one (even if you hate them!). This is an extremely well engineered recording - the best I've heard in ages. An extremely atmospheric recording with just about the deepest/3D soundstage I've heard in my set-up. Truly breathtaking stuff.

And for those of you that already own this - what about "Home computer" on disk two? Sh*t the bed, that's awesome!

Made me realise again just how good SACD can be when its done properly, and just how good my humble Philips 963SA is :)

Rgds,

I don't have the SACD but echoe the sentiments for production quality with both the CD and the DVD discs too. I have this in every format other than the SACD and all put a smile on my face,...that's what it's all about,...the big smile factor ;)

CD is very good too. Deeeeep bass! And quite good musically too although if you play it on the car or cheap shop floor midi it loses both music and aural pyrotechnics

I have cd version and yes very good. The heart beat on disk one is well deeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Jim.

Vinyl is the way to go. I will have to order it. I have it on CD which is OK but compared to the Tour De France Vinyl there is no comparison. Electro Kardiogram will make your house shake!

Hi,

It's so good to see hi fi enthusiasts who actually listen to real music rather than the bland demo crap you usually see in there forums.

YES, YES, YES, this is an awesome recording in any format. I have the vinyl and DVD, and this is a phenomenal recording.

A clue to why this is so good is that Kraftwerk handle all the engineering themselves on all formats, they even have their own 5.1 mastering suite.

I also love 'Home Computer', but the live version of 'Autobahn' is my personal favourite, and 'Elektro Kardiogram' is a room shaker par excelence, but if you have a subwoofer on a 5.1 DTS system, make sure it can take the punishment, the first time I put this on I nearly took out the subwoofer and a corner of my listening room.

haven't you got a 'clearaudio evolution'

on vinyl dear boy, on vinyl!!!

TBH Bottleneck, I had no idea it was available on the black stuff, otherwise I would've.

If I see it going cheap in the HMV sales I'll pick it up and sell the SACD (unless it somehow sounds worse of course ;) )

*fingers in ears* I'm not listening la la la!:D

This is really excellent, I have the UK box set which I have opened and played, also have a sealed German vinyl set, dying to open and play that but keeping it for posterity ;)

I think it will definitely be a collectors item of the future. I also have the boxed LP set and it's superb, but then so are every one of their albums, I have them all

For something different listen to Exceller 8 on vinyl from 1974. Check it out dudes :JPS: :

Ahh,...Exceller 8 is indeed an excellent early compilation album (I too have all Kraftwerk's albums, even got an original promo copy of Tone Float ;) ).
In fact there are a few good early compilation albums which are also highly collectable such as DoppleAlbum and Highrail.
Great to know there are other Kraftwerk fans on here, maybe when they next play live in the UK we should have a meet ;)

I've always loved Kraftwerk. I like the 7" version of Autobahn on Exceller 8! Have you got the one that's just called "Kraftwerk"? It's a double album from 1972. My copy is in coloured vinyl, side one and two is in green vinyl and side three and four is in red vinyl. And there's the album with the road cones on it, can't remember what that's called. Another favourite of mine is Ralf And Florian.

Hi Paul,
Yes I have the original 'Kraftwerk' gatefold album which was the first UK album released by the band under that name and is essentially Kraftwerk 1 and Kraftwerk 2, the first two German albums. The German versions have the traffic cones on the front.

The UK gatefold album was only pressed on black vinyl originally and coloured vinyls are more recent re-presses and the market has been flooded by coloured vinyl re-presses of several of the bands albums, including picture discs (the most famous official coloured vinyl release was the original German pressing of Man Machine on red vinyl, this was quite rare and very collectable, followed by a slightly wider circulation of French pressed red vinyl albums which are still collectable but worth less than the German copies).

The UK pressing of 'Kraftwerk' did come with two label variations though, one was with the standard Veritgo greenish label with the Veritgo woman at the top. The second and more rare lavel was white with black spirals which were very hypnotic when spinning on the turntable.

Just a word of caution on all the recent re-presses, especially the coloured vinyls and picture discs; I am hearing that many of these are unofficial and very poor in sound quality in comparison to original pressings.

Ralph & Florian is one of my favourites too, this too came in several different picture covers depending on Country of pressing. I have the original UK version with the gold embossed PCB on the front cover. It should also have the Comic inside too but not all copies came with this. Tanzmusic, one of my favourite Kraftwerk tracks ;)
(Ralph & Florian has definitely been subject to unofficial re-presses of late).

Hi Paul,

Just a word of caution on all the recent re-presses, especially the coloured vinyls and picture discs; I am hearing that many of these are unofficial and very poor in sound quality in comparison to original pressings.

Ditto this - I've got a resent-ish 'Crown' repress of the first LP (black vinyl, pink traffic cone cover) and it sounds very quiet, suffers a lot of surface noise and is badly centered. I'm guessing it's a boot of some sort. There seem to be a lot of coloured vinyls on ebay at the moment but I'm pretty wary..

and ditto here, I bought a copy of the first and second in the gatefold - a red and a green one and it was definitely a boot ... glue all over one of the sides as well.

Well the ones I had seemed okay sonically I'll grant you... the bits that weren't all gluey anyway :). You could see the vertigo swirl was a pretty bad scan on close examination though and the sleeve was very flimsy.
