I find they should be left on permanently as they have a very long warm up time, and visual quality is impaired if thry are switched on and off between viewing sessions. IME it takes a good week or so for them to come on song and give optimum performance. Decent mains conditioning and power cables will help here.

I think mains isolation is more important Robbo, as the mains hash created by the lava really screws with other appliances. If i boil the kettle with the lava lamp on the final drink effect is not as sweet.

Julian, turn it on about an hour before you have a smoke;)
Just a lamp in there, so continuous use does shorten life expectancy

cheers guys, i was wondering if it was liable to burst into flames if i left it on for extended periods it seems to be made of metal though so it should be ok. it's bubbling nicely as i type after 4 hours.

    penance,
i'm herbal free now so that means i'm like this naturally... worrying really
    cheers

I'm sure even this topic has been covered before here. What an odd place this is :D

I've not even touched my lava lamp for years.

Also, something we found very amusing in the Natural History Museum last weekend was that they had one in there. Had a nice sign saying who had provided it, probably as a nice bit of advertising...... it didn't work though!

    RTFM !!!

8 hours maximum for a Mathmos, 6 for most others; when you start getting micro bubbles, the wax is too hot and prolonged use in this state will knacker the contents of the bottle.

Don't leave them in direct sunlight either...

I've got 3 of them in my bedroom - 2 non-Mathmos, 1 Mathmos. The Mathmos is far superior, but the others are cool colours (and one was only £12!!!).

They go well with the 8track deck I use ;)

    NFMITB....
i'll turn it off then :( it's so relaxing though.
the shop i got it from was closing down so i got it half price (it's a mathmos astro). they were also selling spare bottles for 15 quid so i may pop back in a day or so and get a spare or two if the things do 'go off' as you say.
    cheers

    Mathmos Tuba:

The device is actuall a hollow space that you place your hand into to turn it on and off, it will also respond to sounds which is cool when playing music.

It goes through all colours and is a set of LEDs.

    Check out www.mathmos.co.uk
