im considering a LINN BASIK LVX as an upgrade to replace the tp16 mk5 on my thorens td 166 mk 11. the thing is is it worth the effort or should i hang on for a rega rb250?
im also worried about vta , overhang , the size of the arm basically.
can anyone point me in the right direction?

thasnks

Rob.

It's not a bad arm, but it doesn't have the structural integrity of a rega arm. I've got one on mine, but it's only staying there until I can find a better Linn arm, then it will change. If I were you I'd spend your money on some records or save up for a better arm/deck

thanks guys , i think i will wait till i can get a rega.
im gonna stay with the thorens though, its my first suspended deck , my last deck was a rega 3 and unfortunatly due to circumstances it had to go.
i want to mess about with the thorens , ie , new arm , take the arm lift out , change the speed changer for an on off switch etc.
it did only cost me 35 squids so i cant really go wrong and its in very good nick for the money. ive been influinced by this guys table and like i said , if i bugger it then 35 squids isent a great deal to lose.,

Hi Rob,

The thing you have to bear in mind is that the hole for the Linn may be different from the Thorens. I'm not sure of the size of the Thorens. The Rega is a different size again. A new arm board usually solves the problem. You would need to look up the dimensions. I will try and find them out for you.

Hi Richard,

The Linn fitting would suit an Ittok but these are not cheap these days. Even Akitos are going for a few hundred quid.

thanks SCIDB
ive seen a guy selling blank armboards on e bay to suit my deck, theyr a tenner i think.
the dimentions for the rega would be a massive help just to make sure it would fit.
i recon a vta adjuster would be needed as well providing the arm dosent sit to high.

this guy is using a home made wooden laminate armboard for a moded 250 but has used a vta as well so it defo can be done with some tweeking.

I think a Basik will fit a Thorens nicely. The Rega is longer, so may be more difficult. The Basik LVX in good condition is more than adequate for this turntable. I sold an LVX to a chap with a Thorens TD16x back in 1984. He had an arm board made up by someone with a saw and ended up very happy. You'd be better off upgrading to an LP12 than messing about with 'better' arms. An LP12 with an LVX will be better than your Thorens with any arm.

I you can get the Linn Basik arm for little money,....go for it!

A Rega arm and Thorens TT doesn't seem to be a good match.
(well, so I've been told by my dealer/analog specialist who knows a lot about modifying old Thorens TT's)

You can also hear about Rega arms on Thorens TT's on this site:

http://www.hi-fiworld.co.uk/hfw/oldeworldehtml/thorenstd150.html

quote:
Sadly, the later TD16x's suffered badly with useless arms too. There are some real horrors here, with strange plastic spacing devices instead of proper arm-height adjustment, and oh-so-flexible bearings. The last versions were available with a UK-fitted RB250, which was a fatal mistake - this arm does not work on these little decks. For similar reasons it failed to gel on the LP12.

Actually, one of the best options is to find an old Linn arm. The Basik LVVs and LVXs sound as if they were made to work hand-in-glove with the Thorens, and can be bought for as little as £50

There are better ones about......the basic is well basic!

you should be able to pick up an SME for 50 -60 quid in reasonable nick, in fact I've a spare 3009 which is in good nick.

try makig your own armboard it's dead easy......perspex sounds better than chipboard, mdf, plastic. They were the only ones I made for my 160bc [moded to super]
