No funny answers please, what would you advise you use on the cdp transport to lubricate it. I know there are many grades of grease etc so which one works the best?

There was a common problem to do with this on Micromega players several years back. I dug out the newsgroup sci.electronics.repair FAQ section on CD players, cleaned off the read-laser rails with isopropyl alcohol, then used a light oil instead of grease. The two oils I had to hand were sewing machine oil, and skateboard/rollerblade bearing go-faster oil. I used the latter and it worked a treat. I spread the oil with a cotton bud. Afterwards I picked the longest CD I had and motored it up and down from 1st track to last track to spread the oil better. I never could get at the cogs under the transport, which were also greased, but as I say the rail clean and lube worked well so I left it alone after that.

    Here's the FAQ I followed http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam/cdfaq.htm#cdgicl

I have used Servisol Silicon Grease 70 in noisy transports.
It is an aerosol so make sure to keep it off belts and pulleys.
Best way is to take the transport out and clean out dust before lubricating.

When fitting back, I stick some BluTac in places to help with damping.

For Cookie's RCD991 (now lordsummit's), we used a cotton bud and GT85 teflon lubricant. I used the same when I had a laser problem with my CD63 about 8 years ago, and it's still running fine with that to this day.
