A SETBACK IN SHEFFIELD

Due to Mike Mills' illness, tonight's show in Sheffield was postponed until june 15th, when the band will return to this arena to make up for tonight's nonappearance. Mike is receiving medical care, and we are all hopeful that the flu-like symptoms afflicting him will be better soon and that we will be able to resume shows soon, hopefully tomorrow night in Glasgow at the S.E.C.

The announcement came from the stage, when Michael and Peter went up to let the crowd know how sorry the guys were not to be able to play tonight. Like all concerts, they are here to play, and this is not something we do lightly; the crowd was really supportive and understanding and were treated to something pretty special: an accoustic set of "The One I Love," "Leaving New York," "I've Been High," and "Losing My Religion." The house lights stayed up, and it was the largest coffeehouse in the world for 20 minutes; the slow and beautiful melodies amidst a surprising and somber situation...one guy stood throughout "The One I Love" with arms raised clutching his beers in a show of solidarity (later he appears to have decided to drink the beers!). I saw familiar faces on the front row including some fan club members from other parts of the United Kingdom and from Germany. Michael mentioned that he knows a lot of people came from far away to be here and that just made the dissappointment for the band even worse...but if a guy is too sick to play, which Mike is, this is all we can do--come back and play another time, and the 15th of June it is for Sheffield: the date is available in the hall, U2 will have just played Manchester the night before; we will be playing Manchester two nights later, and it is during a short break in the tour which will now be shorter.

We are hoping tomorrow night's show in Scotland, as well as the rest of the shows this week, can proceed, but we will probably not know until tomorrow and will get the word out all means possible. Stay tuned. On a personal level, the overarching sensations I felt during the short set the guys gamely got through tonight were of admiration and gratitude, seeing how Michael and Peter (and Mike for that matter) handled the situation, and for the fans, who were equally graceful in their acceptance. It turned a negative situation into one that, if not exactly positive, was at least as good as it could be...not the night all had envisioned, but a memorable night nonetheless, and something tells me June 15th here in Sheffield will be too...and hopefully happier for all concerned. It will be the only indoor show on the summer open-air leg of the tour, and I imagine it will rock.

Meanwhile, as Michael said from the stage, keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers. He is going to be fine, but how soon, we do not know.

GLASGOW SHOW CANCELLED

REMHQ.com just received word from Bertis (late East Coast time) that the show scheduled for Tuesday night at the S.E.C. in Glasgow has been cancelled due to Mike's illness.

According to Bertis, Ã¢â‚¬Å“Mike has been receiving medical care in Sheffield and is resting. As to how this affects the shows scheduled for the remainder of the week and beyond, the band is taking it day-to-day based on the advice of Mike's doctors.

Obviously we all want Mike to get better, and clearly we all want to play the shows; And rest assured we will do so as soon as possible. Hope to see you all in Birmingham Wednesday night. As for make-up dates, the band will return to Sheffield on June 15th, as announced earlier today. We are currently trying to sort out a Glasgow replacement date, but that may take a while.Ã¢â‚¬Â

NEC tomorrow night

Despite the recent postponements of their Sheffield and Glasgow concerts, R.E.M. are expected to perform at The NEC Arena, Birmingham on 23 February as scheduled.

However a further announcement will be made after 9am tomorrow morning and we advise that you return to the web site for the update at that time.

Seen 'em twice - at Cardiff Arms Park 1995, and Glastonbury 2003 - absolutely excellent live!

I think my housemate Ilockyer's thinking about trying to get to one of their gigs and get a ticket off a tout - I might well be up for that myself

I think this has been mentioned before Dom, but I think that a few forum members (including myself) were at the Cardiff gig. Didn't realise it was as long ago as 95!
