This is a recipe for the MNO ic

Having used silver and gold to make a varriety of ic cables over the last five years. I had started to wonder if that was the limit of my experimentation.

I've posted several cheap ic recipes that are damn good ...I thought it was time to add the MNO.....

for a 1m ic cable you will need the following

4m of platinum alloy 0.5mm dia
4m of ptfe sleeve 0.9mm id
    4 x eichmann silver bullets
    good silver solder
a few odds and sod like heatshrink

thread the conductors into the ptfe ...fold over so both ends are together. Secure the loose ends in a vice and use a power drill to twist up the insulated conductors.

Snip the loop and the cut the twisted pair in to two equal lengths. fit the silver bullets and tidy up with heat shrink if needed.

So how do they sound ?

I'll make the comparision with the AgAu as its a cable I've become familiar with.

To be honest I was underwhelmed by them ....on inital fitting.
But once removed it clear that the MNO's were making the AgAu's sound harsh brash and grainy. The AgAu were sounding rather un musical too.

    Cost of the MNO ic's
wire £12/gram approx 10grams/m so 4m will be £480 plus £10 for the ptfe and £80 worth of plugs and bits ...

So the best part of £600 for a DIY ic ......is it worth it, probabley not !

    Oooch .......

not at present ....I'm sufficiently interested to see what a paired down set sound like .....ie silver ribbon returns and alloy signal conductors ...watch this space as they say.

Pete, I think the silver return version if it sounds good could be a real winner (assuming my sums are right at about £350 - 360 ).
(I was going to say bargain but ....)

Let us know how it goes.

    I'm Tempted to try !!!!!

The lesson that I've learned from these threads is that the more expensive the metal, the better the sound. I shall therefore offer very soon the Tones "Pluton(TM)" range of ICs and speaker cables. These will have a core of solid plutonium in a sheath of lead and a PTFE dielectric. The higher the cable grade, the thicker the lead sheathing. However, so astounding is the sound of these cables, the way they could be said to make the sound radiate, even explode, outwards, that any self-respecting audiophool would regard the minor health hazard involved in their use as well worth it.

I would be less than honest if I didn't point out that plutonium decays eventually into lead, which is hardly the world's most brilliant conductor, but true audiophools will want to recapture the Pluton brilliance by renewing their cables regularly.

More details as to price and availability just as soon as I get these surplus SS-25 warheads I've acquired on the black market. Some git called bin Laden also wanted them for some nefarious purpose, but the true spirit of capitalism won out :D

wasn't there some IC's that contained something like air..? - I recall seeing them on some forum and the case looked like a clear platic bag type material...Hmmm...

i love all these 'air dielectric' cables.....

that just happen to be wrapped in PTFE, i mean come on WFT.

like the tara 'vaccum dielectric', aye Vaccum in a PTFE sleeve and a copper wire that has already been exposed to air during construction.

Air dialectric is the way forward. I was listening to some wireless speakers at the bristol show. The sound wasn't great but it will be interesting to see what cable manufacturers make of that. I'm sure we'll be seeing rebranded air freshener that alters the static charge and humidity of the air in your listening room. Do the shake and vac and put your stereo image back.

if you look on hong kong ebay ...theres some weird stuff ..silver filaments floating in oil in clear pvc tube ...I can't think of a way to stop them leaking ...other wise I'd try to reverse engineer them.

Did try the bees wax thing ...but its melting point is too low ...kept getting a puddle near my power amp of the time ....

There are some brands of heat shrink that incorporate a glue that melts as you shrink it and then cools and forms a seal. I've only ever seen it in large sizes though. But you may be able to do something similar.

Liquid electrical tape? should provide a good seal.

Also have you thought about the other members of the platinum family?
    Iridium
    Osmium
    Palladium
    Rhodium
    Ruthenium

palladium and rhodium might be the easiest to get.
