I would vote for Decades by Joy Division and pretty much everything else and virtualy everything done by The Smiths, This Charming Man, Misserable Lie, Cemetry Gates, Suffer Little Children.

I bought Joy Division's Closer ablum yesterday and I was really quite impressed with it, however the lyrics are so depressing it kind of makes you feel depressed.

Why do mancs make such depressing music? Oasis, The Verve, Smiths, Morrisey, Joy Division are all known to be depressing stuff but I Manchester certainly dosn't have a problem with depression.

'Harry's circumcision' on Lou Reed's Magic and Loss. The song is about cutting your own dick off. The album is about chainsmoking junkie friends of Lou Reed [a chainsmoking junkie] dying of cancer. And it's fairly average, like most of Lou Reed's stuff.

Lyrically, yeah, most of the Smiths' stuff is depressing, but musically, a lot of it has uplifting sounds, so I'd say they're disqualified from this, although "How soon is now" is pretty dirgey (that's one of the reasons why I like it!).

I reckon Auld Lang Sign (spelling?) has to be the most depressing song around - it's dull, dirgey and boring.

Oh no, hang on, scratch that. How about our GODAWFUL national anthem. More like National Grind. Total cack.

Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" was very upsetting the frist, second, third... (etc) time I listened to it - especially in conjunction with the video... has made many grown men cry like babies apparently. However, I suppose "depressing" might be the wrong classification - it's just so damn sad - will it qualify for this thread?

I believe that Lancaster has the highest sicide rate of anywhere in the country.
AT I rather think that you are following the sterotypical view of Mancunians.
What about the Inspirals, the Stone Roses, The happy mondays, the birth of Rave culture, all uplifting.
Stop moaning AT or everyone else will think Manchester is a dull grey place where it always rains. ;)

Guilty as charged your honour. In mitigation, he'd been a hero of mine for nigh-on 35 years, and it was distressing to see such a powerful and charismatic figure looking so frail and ill, but also tremendously moving to realise he was still smart enough to know how to make a song entirely his own.

metallica's one or fade to black. one's about a guy with no senses except his inner monologue and fade to black's your standard metal suicide song. personally i find the idea that i could be left conscious but unable to interact with the outside world (or even be sure it';s there) terrifying - i just hope it's not the definition of hell.
    cheers

Isn't it the definition for Guantanemo Bay?

My own 'most depressing song', or at least the first one that's sprung to mind now, would be 'The last time I saw Richard' by Joni Mitchell. See http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/TheLastTimeISawRichard.cfm if you're interested. One of many great lyrical treats that Joni has to offer.
