I recently tried bypassing my preamp and putting the outputs of my AA5+ straight in to my 200w amp pluged into my 90db sensetivity speakers.

To cut a long story short, it was loud too loud.

I plugged my preack it and listened to some other tunes.

Then to my horror i realised I was getting a crakling sound (sometimes and quietly) from my right tweeter.

Assuming i had broken it, i forgot about it untill today.

Being unable to sleep I decided some nice relaxing music could help. Being a sociable chap i dusted off the phones. after a few secs of playing i noticed the crackling sound was still there.

    any suggestions?

    I use a Rotel RC-971bx as a preamp.

    What could cause that crackling?

Brain deducing away, hmm, it would have to be the CDP.

Why would connecting straight to an amp damage it?

    What could be the prob?

Sounds to me like you may have damaged your power amp. No wait it wont be that if you heard it with phones. Hmm. Try some different music, maybe it's just one CD that has digital clipping or something.

You would have been puling RCA plugs out and in again. I had such a sound once when one of the centre conductors of an RCA input lead wasn't making a good connection (failed solder joint). I phoned my dealer and complained about the bad amp he sold me until I realised it was one of my home-made leads that was the problem  Worth checking, anyway.

If not that perhaps a broken connection in the amp/CD player. Especially if either use those all in one plastic mounted sockets, the top socket can put quite a bit of strain on the solder joints at the bottom if you have death grip phono sockets.
