Click on the link to the live album (white cover) and play the sound sample of I Hate Your Kid. Great stuff, Choochtown is another superb album. I've not heard any of the others yet. He's on tour in February too!

Bert Jansch, especially the early albums like Jack Orion. There's a couple of decent Jansch compilations. His more recent stuff features guest players like Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler, and isn't up to much. Worth seeing live if you get the chance, he's an amazing player.

    Leo Kottke, any.

John Fahey, any. The greatest guitarist who ever lived IMO. Kottke is his most successful descendent. Try his final, posthumous, album, Red Cross, released on his own, magnificent, Revenant Records label. A great short story writer too, check out his collection How Bluegrass Music Destroyed My Life.

Jackson C. Frank, self-titled album. Big influence on Jansch, and just about everybody else in the 60s UK folk scene (Nick Drake included).

Jack Rose from the incredible Pelt released an incredible bluesy, deep southy album called Red Horse, White Mule on Eclipse Records which if you're into classic guitar is a must buy. Actually, the vinyl release for this is probably long gone, but I read somewhere that it's being released together with his latest album Opium Musick on one cd (on VHF records).

Best guitarist I've ever seen live. He is touring sometime in the spring, just him and 'is guitar. Breathtaking.

Check out ex-Alarm guitarist Dave Sharp - his first album "Hard Travelin'" is half acoustic (just him on guitar), half electric. Very Dylan-like.

I always thought Sharp was seriously underrated as a guitarist in The Alarm and, of course, not being the front-man then, we rarely heard him sing. On Hard Travelin you hear what a great gravelly voice he has and the acoustic guitaring... well, when I heard the album I assumed there were at least two guitars being played - then I saw him live and realised it was just the one!

The only problem you will have is finding a copy - I had to search long and hard for it on CD. It's the same with his second album "Downtown America" - very tricky to get hold of - but definitely worth it.

One other album that springs to mind is Mike Scott's "Bring 'Em All In" album - he plays with more heart and feeling than technique and there are a couple of iffy tracks but there are also some fine songs with fantastic lyrics.

    Matt.

How could I forget Richard Youngs?
There are three free tracks to download from Epitonic. My favourite is Soon it will be fire, which I think you should all treat yourselves to.

Let me know what you think. Great record IMO, especially "Blues Run The Game". He died a few years ago, never really got the recognition he deserved (although Jansch always raves about him).

There's some background on him here:

Was Jansch in Pentangle - got Cruel Sister by the Pentangle and the 2nd side is all 1 song: Jack Orion - its class, id recommend this one.
Anyone know the Strawbs album with "the man who called himself jesus" on it?

He certainly was. The solo Jack Orion's even better than the one on Cruel Sister.

This arrived today. Only played 3/4 of it.

It is clearly a classic album.

    Impressed.

It shows me that my current plan of looking 'back' in time at classic albums more than the latest releases is a better plan for me at the moment. I have a lot of musical gaps to fill!

Thanks for the reccomendation.. and it isnt even plinquey! ;)
