I am on look out for a power amp to sit between Dax Decade and JM Lab 905 standmount. Recommendations pl. Or bring out that Pass Lab Aleph 3 or 30 that you have in your cupboard.

a desire decade springs to mind as the obvious choice or how about one of the new digital amps. es labs, bel canto, tact, lc audio, and others all offer them, might be worth a listen. if not have a listen to the edge series of amps - if i could afford one i'd chop my naim kit in for it in a second.

there is an aleph 3 and aleph l pre on hififorsale.com for 1050 & 750.
    cheers

I'm a bit wary of the digital amps at present - ignorance on my part. Tell me about the Edge Series ..

... yes I saw the pass lab 3. what's that like for price?

not a clue about the pass amps.
    http://www.edgeamp.com/default.htm
have a look at the nl series if you are feeling exceedingly flush and the g series if you're just rolling in it. actually i think the g series are quite reasonable.
sound wise they are very clean and clear but can rock the house when necessary. i heard them with a sim moon eclipse cd player, an edge nl pre, the nl laser biased stereo amp and some silverline sonatas. the only downside was the room it was in which had a bit of an echo but it sounded absolutely great with whatever was played and at whatever volume.
they occasionally come up on audiogon for very reasonable money.
    cheers

well I can see where the name Edge comes from, and Power Rating into 8 Ohms: 800 watts/channel !!

I think I could live with less than one tenth of that.

Purely from a point of curiosity (both personal and professional), why are you wary of class D amps (LC for one isn't digital as such...)?

Ditton - go valve.... you want to try a 50 watt Graaf GM50/50. After much heart searching I have decided its just too hot to have in the house with a toddler. let me know if you want to try it.

happy to play the daft laddie on this. I dont understand the advantage in going digital at the amp, especially given the lengths I've gone to getting a really good dac!

if there is a Noddy guide, I'll read it.

I have come across reference to the D class, and understand that those in the know rate this. But as yet its beyond by ken.

There's what looks like a good explanation of digital amps in this months HiFi News magazine. I say looks good as I haven't read it yet, but it's a few pages long and their technical articles are usually excellent.

    Ditton,

a good friend of mine runs a Dax Decade into a Tact SDA2175. As a valve lover, it isn't really for me but impressive all the same. Imaging is superb. I would imagine it would dovetail quite well with the JM Labs. Also try Accuphase and possibly Naim 250.

i'd be wary of trying the nap 250. naim power amps are supposed to have a bandwidth limited input and some don't take kindly to not being pampered in this way.
    cheers

    Julian,

I was thinking of the new units. Is it still the same caveat?

as far as i know it is still the same (it is the same circuit after all iirc) but i've not delved to deeply into the new stuff as i think it sounds bland.
    cheers

    That's a shame.

The dax decade is as neutral as Sweden, and the JM's like something with a bit of riddim IMO. What about Densen?

    Ditton,

I did mean it in a positive sense :) I like the Decade. It adds little of it's own character to the music which is great. I'll be interested in your findings re the JM's and valves.
