Reviews & recommendations

I was listening to a CD from the library the other week of stuff by 'the Rev. Gary Davis' I think it was, a variety of blues, gospel, and sermon. Kinda liked the gospel stuff, anyone have any recommendations for some good vintage gospel recordings?

Try googling the name 'Mahalia Jackson' - she is recognised as a top gospel singer..
More lightheartedly ifyou check out some Mississippi Fred Mcdowell records his wifemakes a guest appearance with a terrific gospel song.

Notsoliveanddangerous..

For great live rock albums look no further than:

1. Live at Leeds by the Who
....go for the reissued CD version cos it's got loads more tracks, it's just brilliant - Moon the Loon is on fire

2. Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy

...and I'd also recommend

3. Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes 'Live at the Greek'
...for stunning live renditions of all those Led Zep classics on 2 CD's
Googling Thin Lizzy (a favourite band) it transpires that the band were unhappy with alot of this material and overdubbed much of it..or rather, all of it bar the drums and the audience..oh dear..

Just make sure it stays at a decent rate and its keeping a balance between negative and positive reviews.

I think the only thing its lacking is a bit of originality but thats so difficult these days what with every major music publication using every idea under the sun.

i still have "live & dagerous" on vynil.

I have the Gonjasufi album too, I haven't listened to it loads yet but I like it so far. It's very diverse and anything Flying Lotus produces is bound to be good! I like the Gorillaz song too and the album. Bobby Womack can really sing.

Gotan Project - La Revancha del Tango

Just copy this one in from the "Album recommendations" thread on GH to get it started. I think we should try to keep it to a new thread for each review/recommendation so things stay on track (and so this place gets more threads :D)

Title: la revancha del tango
Artist: gotan project
Genre: Agentinian Tango meets drum and bass  with a bit of jazz thrown in.
Description: See "Genre" :D ...and www.gotanproject.com. Kind of mellow drum 'n' bass with a serious Latin/Tango flava and the odd bit of French accordion and modern jazz vibes. Stunning.
Choice tracks: trÃÂptico - seriously hipnotic, rhythmic track (RealAudio extract: http://www.gotanproject.com/ram/triptico.ram) which thumps away for a seemingly never-ending 8 and half minutes. Highlight is an incredible jazz violin solo towards the end. If this doesn't get your foot tapping (no need for FE system :MILD: ) then nothing will.

Michael.
The mellow drum 'n' bass with a Latin/Tango flair, sprinkled with the enchanting accents of French accordion, gives it a unique charm, and the modern jazz vibes add a brilliant touch – truly stunning.

The blues player you're referring to is likely Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. He was known for his distinctive white suit, white hat, deep voice, and proficient banjo playing. Gatemouth Brown made appearances on late-night TV shows during the 80s and 90s. While "Red Dog" doesn't match his stage name, Gatemouth Brown's unique style left a lasting impression on the blues community.
